Bought another Sportster today that is ailing. I know its difficult to say what a noise is without hearing it,I already know I'm going to have to take it apart to know for sure. I'm not sure what the noise is. Its not the steady knock knock knock of a rod. It starts easy,doesn't smoke. Its kind of a rattle. I listened around the clutch and don't think the magnets are loose ['87 model]
At the bottom of the rear cylinder I could hear a little tap. Maybe a wrist pin?

Check the primary chain tension first. Seen many of those way loose and slapping the cases.
