Help with Harley Sportster 85', 1000cc's

I am having a few problems.

Sportster is starting to backfire.

Chain is drooping.

When I checked out pricing at local Harley they pretty much said it would be 1k to get everything done for chain. Backfiring is a recent problem.

If I knew what I was doing I am willing to try and fix these things myself.

Thanks

If you have a chain drive that cant be to hard to either adjust or renew.
the dealers quoting 1k surley you need to get another quote somewhere else.

As Dave said its highway robbery

It was to replace the chain and sprocket was the quote. Could I get a step by step to adjust the chain maybe? Safely.

1. Put the bike on a lift
2. Loosen the rear axle nut. You *may* have to loosen the rear brake mount as well
3. adjust rear axle adjusters untill the chain is set properly (check tension at several locations)
4. ensure both sides are adjusted equally (measure from center of swingarm pivot point to center of axle, adjust adjusters untill both sides are exactly the same and chain is correct tension)
5. tighten rear axle nut. tighten rear brake mount (if previously loosened)

don't forget to clean and lube the chain while you are at it.

And after your done doing what rockbiter said,

1. Find dog poo
2. Place dog poo in bag
3. Go to Stealership, and open fron to door
4. Locate ass that told you 1000 dollars for I guess a 24kt gold chain
5. Lite bag on fire and hit him in the face with it

If no one voluntarily stomps fire out for him. Feel free to leave a boot mark on his head........

I'm told it might be a timing issue for the backfire. I would probably have to goto shop on that one?

When you say backfire, do you mean out the pipe, or carb? Is in consistant, or only first start up to warm, or warm and on?

Backfire out of the pipes, generally is a rich condition. If it's out of the carb, a lean condition. But you need to be more specific about the "backfire". It is an ironhead, but as an 85 it may as well be an evo. Lots of help on here.

You can go on ebay and buy a complete repair manual.
There pretty cheap and will save you a ton of $$$$$$

It could be the chain just needs adjusting. As for the back
fire issue... Strat with a new set of plugs. Gap them before
you put them in though..
I have the same bike, there very easy to work on.

Start with a new set of plugs, gap them right first. Another
thing is with oxy fuel it may to lean on the low end. You
might need open the fuel screw abit.
You can get a complete repair manual for these bikes on
ebay pretty cheap. You'll save alot of $$$ on fixing the small
things yourself. I have the same bike there very easy to work
on.
