05 sportster

Hello everyone. I bought my wife a 05 883L sportster a couple of years ago as a first bike. I had planned to get her a softtail or dyna (evo) after she had more saddle time but she likes the sporty, justs wants a little more power now.
What would be a good upgrade? Not looking for a drag racer. It's totally stock now. Thinking about going to 1200, cams, carb upgrade(I love my Mikuni), pipes, etc. Head work? I did my E-glide without this forum and spent more than I would have had to. Don't want to make same mistake twice. I'm happy with mine, just could have same power cheaper.

Thanks,
Lyn

Several kits out there, Big Boyz have one also.
Find there link around here somewhere, they have prices and dyno sheets listed.
Been considering the same for my wifes 05 883C.
Also considering going to a larger front sprocket (up from 28 to 29 or 30 tooth) to reduce rpm at highway speeds.

I would think if all that is wanted is a "little more power",
1200cc conversion
Any exhaust with a muffler other than stock (what's on there now?)
Free flowing air filter
Mikuni if the budget allows, otherwise a rejetted stock would suffice.

That should give it "a little more power". Any other mods,(cams, heads, stroker.) are beyond a little more power, and typically done cause we're gearheads and we tell them (the women) that it needs it to achieve "a little more power".

I think going to 1200cc's is required along with performance air cleaner and exhaust. I think street porting heads would be a big help also. The S.E. cat. only shows one set of cams for 04 up sportsters and they are not what I would want for the street. I have the stock carb off my TC that has had the mods done to it, just rejet it. I like the Cycle Shack slip ons and I think they would work good with stock headers. Not sure what cams are available. I still haven't given up on a larger bike yet. I'm too big to ride a sportster (grape ape), but if I trade up to soft tail or dyna I could ride it too.(just to keep the battery up and etc. LOL)

Thanks
Lyn

Hi Lyn,

We have our 1250cc bolt-on big bore kits available now for only 750.00. No replacement for displacement. If you want a good foundation to build upon this is an excellent starting point. The new 1200 heads would also be a great choice even if you don't port them because of the new port layout that, unfortunately, the 883's didn't get. An out of the box set of '05 Sportster heads flow the equivalent of a set of Thunderstorms with better mid lift velocity. I would also stay conservative on your cam selection such as the SE bolt-in units. A decent air cleaner set up such as an SE unit would suffice for a build of this caliber. A good exhaust is the thing that you REALLY don't want to miss on though. This is the piece that I would encourage you to stretch out on a little bit. The good ole stand-by Supertrapp is by far the best if you are looking for a pipe that will adapt to different stages of a build on a Sportster while not being so loud that your lady will hate to ride it.

Hope this helps!
