My new sportster needs advice

I used to have an awsome ironhead when I was young, but I didn't build it. I am now wanting to build a bike myself, but don't know what year to buy. I like the idea of the new roadsters, but I think they simply weigh too much. I would like to build something light and very powerful. Can I get some suggestions where to start? What year and model? I don't weigh a lot myself, and a really light/fast sportster sounds good to me, but I don't have the experience to know what the Hot setup is, now. Please help with suggestions.

Thanks

Pre-2004 definitely. Mid-90's up to 2003 will get you decent brakes, decent electronics, good machining, etc. In 96 the new switch housings were introduced, in 2000 or 2001 the four-piston calipers were introduced and in 2004 65 extra pounds were introduced. If I had to start over and my main goal was speed I would get a 1990-and-up 883 and punch the motor out to 88" (bore), 89" (stroker), 90" (bored), 99 (bore & stroke) or 100 (bore and stroke) get the tranny gears back-cut by a professional shop or get a 6-speed. 100Hp s/b easy with any of those combo's, some will get over 130 if done right. Even 100/100 on a sporty is very fun. Beyond 120-130 you may start breaking some parts. You can get a 2003 and earlier sporty down to 450 lbs or less with a little work.

You could build a bobster. Just google search bobster and that is a bobber type frame with a sporty engine. That will cut the weight drastically also depending on what size tires, if you leave on fenders / etc.

Good luck on your build.

I definitely like the sound of a stroker. 100/100 sounds good. I don't want to be fixing my bike all the time. I assume 883 frame is lighter? Which combo might give 100 - 110hp? What is back cutting gears? Any opinions on which years look the best before mods? (best seats, tanks, etc...)

Save some money. You need not stroke or big bore to get 100HP. Buy an 883 used and check out Nallin Racing. www.nrhsperformance.com
