I may catch hell for this but my opinion is find a used buell ( I bought mine for $3k) and swap engines. Put your sportster engine back in the buell and sell it. 100hp and 90 ftlbs o tourque stock. Around 85 or so to the rear tire.

what size is the engine? if it's not 1200, get it bored to 1200, get the heads reworked, and get a hotter cam and ignition. you should be able to do this for under 2K.

You'd be suprised .
If you bored it to 1200 with a set of Weisco pistons and leave the heads alone .
Add a SE cam and ignition module .
You'd have $$$ left over and they'd wonder what just pased them .

All of the budget-minded upgrades have been mentioned.
All good advice.
Have built quite a few XL's over the years. 74" Ironheads and 88" Evo engines.
Finishing an 88" Evo, hardtail chassis with a 230 tire.

Here's the part # for Weisco reverse dome 9 1/2 comp pistons K1628
S E bolt in cams 25648-91
Consider buying new 1200 cylinders for the price its not worth time and hassle to re bore.
Ignition module 32598-96
And a SE Air cleaner assembyl with a Dyna jet kit .
Stock heads will bring the comp a bit and wont require any springs either for the cams
The 883 gearing will have them all amazed and youll out run any 1200 on the road and most other bikes also !
Oh ! Use the saved money to put toward your Busa .

This also works. extemely well, but blows the budget.
Cylinder head work.
Andrews #8 cams
Wiesco flatops
883 trans spocket
Dyna ignition
Supertrapp 2/1
Carb mods
Dyno tune.
This always shows just about 83-85 hp/ft lbs.
You will blister most Harleys with this power/weight/gearing combo.
