04 Sportster 1200 R Timing

my friend has a stock 04 sportster 1200R , that pings real bad under a load. good fuel helps, but still way too much ping. does it have an adjustable ignition ?? to back off timing. also going to check CCP to see where it's at, among other things.i'm use to 91 Ultra-Evo & 07 Ultra-TC. any help would be appreciated. thanks much THEDRIVER

Try this....remove one plug wire from each head, that will slow the rate of combustion chamber burn slower. If this helps you know the ign is timed to far advanced for the fuel your running, or you richen up the mixture and give it more fuel to burn....hook up all the plugs and check for detonation again.

You can adjust the timing at the cam cover in front of #2 cam.
Good Luck

check the Vakuum VOES switch

this switch will advance timing under load
and is between the Intake and carburator

Thanks for the help HDMD88, i'll try it soon, and get it straightened out befor he kills the poor think. HARLEYMANIAC, I think the VOES retards timing under load when vacume drops, i adjusted it on my 91 ultra after build and needed VOES to trip sooner to retard sooner to help keep the tune from ping under load. thanks both for reply THEDRIVER

under cruising and load you have more vacume this will advance timing
from 18° to 35° BTD as you gain speed the vacum wil drop

What you friend needs a Screamin' eagle Ignition tuner.

It's like the race tuning but it only does the timing curves.

I have one New in the box that i have on e-bay, but for you, 175.00 + shipping.

Sorry Harleymaniac but it is the other way around....it retards the timing when the switch is activated, that ususllty happens at lower rpms under a load...low vacuum (5 to 7) or a detonation prone condition.

sorry but i understand retarding is less ° BTD and advancing is bigger °

but because english is not my language i could be wrong

http://www.mklsportster.com/xlvoes.htm

"retarded" or default curve for an engine under hard load or WOT

advanced" curve under light load / cruising
