Help me plan my trip back to Texas

I am looking at traveling back to Texas in September around Labor day week. I have toured the Hill Country several times and plan to see it again along with Median and Bandera but would like to go on out further west to Big Bend. Can someone give me some insight as what to do or where to stay out there. Is the weather going to probably be decent then or should I wait to later in the Month of September?

I plan on taking a full week out there so I should be able to see a lot.

Well it's still gonna be hot especially the first part of September. If you can make it in October that's what I would go far. Hill Country we have stayed in Kerrville and Fredricksburg and either would be my choice. If you stay in Fredricksburg there are several motels on Main and within walking distance to all of the shops and eating places. We just made that trip Memorial weekend and had a blast. You have to make the twisted sisters run if have not done so. Many other fine roads in the area also. We were in Big Bend the first week in April. You can stay in Alpine or Marfa. We stayed in Marfa at the old Hotel Paisano. There were several of us and got a good group rate. Make the Davis Mountains trip and the Observatory if you are into that. Presidio Road or River Road between Presidio and Study Butte is a must if you like to ride the twisties. Big bend park is nice especially the Chisos Basin area. I just wish they would step up the speed limits on the park roads but I can see why they don't. Also if you head to Big Bend from the Hill Country I would cut down to Hwy 90 and make that route.
You have to stop in Langtry and see the Judge Roy Bean place atleast once.

Forgot to add if you have MS Streets and Trips I can send you some maps of our rides...

Thanks Strick!
That's the type of info I am looking for. I have done the 3 sisters but can't really get enough of them. I do have the last week in September available to me also. I was just worried it may get too cold at night to ride without leathers and I was really not wanting to have to pack that stuff also. But hell we probably won't have to be riding at night much.

Is Big Bend worth the trip? I was looking at one sight on where to stay and it mentioned some ghost town. Is that one of the place you mentioned?

Is there any "good" border towns to cross over at so my girlfriend can say she's been to Mexico? I have went across down by Padre and it was interesting to say the least. I see Piedras Negras in pretty close.

Go ahead and send me the maps and I will see if our IT dept has the software to open them?

As always thanks to the forum for having such a wealth of knowledge and experience.

Don't forget to cross the border now you need either a passport or a govt issued picture ID AND a certified copy of your birth cert.

It's a days ride from the Hill Country down to big bend going the scenic route. You can haul a** out I10 where the speed limit is 80 and and cut some time but you miss the scenery. If you have not been to Big Bend Park it's worth the trip. I think it's $10 per person for a five day pass(wife paid while I was talking). I'm guessing the ghost town you mentioned is Lajitas. Well it's now a resort and the rooms are about $200 a day. The mayor died (or was eaten) so you can no longer buy him a beer. Yea the mayor was a goat. In April down in Big bend most mornings were 40 but it warmed quickly. I think unless we have some early cold front temps will not be cold in Sept. Send me an email addy and I'll send a map to try out...

Stay away from border towns not worth the risk, too much drug cartel violence nad kidnappings going on these days. Just my two cents.

Spend a night in Kerrville or Fredricksburg either is fine. But also check out the biker friendly D'Rose Inn in Leakey. Great place to stay and real close to the great roads to ride.

How much time should I allow for Big Bend? I am not much into hiking so really it will be just riding around soaking it all in.

For Big Bend itself,3 days would be plenty.
I was there April19-21.

I bet the ghost town is Terlingua.
I stayed up the road from Terlingua, about 5 miles,in Study Butte.

I left Dallas and rode to Junction....Langtry...Sanderson,,,Marathon....Big Bend & Terlingua.
..up the river to Presidio...Marfa...Davies Mountains.....Uvalde.
Covered the southern half of the Hill Country from Uvalde.Moved on to Fredericksburg and did the northen half. Then home to Dallas.

3200 miles..16 short days.

Had the time of my life !!!

I have done the ride the others are talking about....Big Bend is a must. While in Big Bend I would highly recommend the "river road" from Big Bend to Presidio, then north on 67 to Shafter (ghost town), then on to Marfa (stay at El Paisano) then on to Ft Davis (Davis Mountain Loop) head back south from Davis to Big Bend (hwy 118). If you are driving back to Hill Country (assuming you have done 335, 336, and 337 you can go from Big Bend to Del Rio on 90... you can cut North on one of those country roads (can't think of the name but easy to find on Texas Map and work your way back to Leakey etc....Did this trip in April...my best trip ever. Texas is an excellent place to ride and never leave the state.

What's up my old friend. No I am just bringing my girlfriend out and seeing some of you old scooter trash and showing her the hill country. Maybe you can ride part of the way with us out there.

You ever hear from Jimmy anymore?
