Anyone else in DC/at Rolling Thunder this weekend
Months ago, the wife and I planned a trip to DC (we'd never been, and had wanted to), not realizing that we would be going there during Memorial Day weekend/Rolling Thunder. Although it was super busy, I would not have traded it for anything. We took the cage ourselves, but having all the bikes to gawk at during the amazing weather was a nice bonus. I'm 29, and have not served, but have many relatives who have been, or still are, in active service.
The highlight of our trip was talking to Dan, a Vietnam vet from MA, who was camped over the hill from the reflecting pond. He was there to display the huge American and MA POW/MIA flags. We saw the MA flag, and headed over to see what the deal was. He immediately came over, and asked if I was a service member (I have a military style hair cut, was cleanly shaved, and have a fit build...my wife thinks I was being given "respect/space" by people because of my look). We spent at least a half hour talking with him about his experiences during the war, and how like him (I'm short) I would have been a tunnel rat. All together, it was an amazing experience to be there during Memorial Day weekend. All of the vets and family members of those who are, or have, served definitely added to the importance of the day.
Was anyone else there? Kept thinking to myself as I walked around that some of you had to be there.
