1999 Fat Boy - Evo or TC88
I'm new to the forum so please bear with me. I purchased a 1999 Fat Boy in mint condition 3 weeks ago and am I ever happy. I love this bike. My question is I was under the impression from what I read that the 1999 was the first year with the TC 88 engine. Mine has the Evolution engine. At first I was disappointed but some have told me this is a good thing. I don't know what to think. Any opinions? Thanks

1999 was the first yr for the Twin Cam 88 in the Touring and Dyna lines. 2000 was the first yr for the Twin Cam in the Softail line. Not nec a bad thing in my opinion.

Other than having less power, there is nothing seriously wrong with an EVO. Their weak areas are well known but they're still a tried n true package. They are beginning to be "old school", at least among the newbies. Ya see someone with an EVO and think, "I bet he's been riding a while". Sort of like instant street cred. Twin cams are better if you want to get BIG hp #s but there are quite a few 90+hp EVOs out there. How fast do you want to go? A lot of people like their look better than a Twin Cam.

Feeling inferior? An 80" Evo does NOT have more power than an 88" Twin Cam, in stock configuration, nor with simple air-cleaner & pipes change.
The EVO is a great motor, but not sure what your point (if you have one) is.
And a rigid mounted EVO in a softail frame gives a BUNCH of "buzz" that many people don't miss with the Twin Cams.

Yea, but the TC's run so much hotter.. Likely because their oem heads flow 10% less than an 80 evo does. And I suppose the TC's smaller Exhaust valve is part of this too..
Everyone has their own preference..

That's an amazingly well thought out post there mister. And I see it was your second attempt to contribute here at the VTF after being a member for several years. Evidently I have struck your nerve with this post?
If you want to make a point here you can take as much time as you wish to type out what will best convey your point of view. Or you can just duck in to the room take a sh!t on the floor and duck out as you seem to have done here.
Move along, nothing to see here folks....

So what IS your point? Sheesh, did someone just come in here and scream out "EVOs are PU$$Y BIKES!" and run off? What's with all this sensitivity?
1) It's no secret the Evo heads were better than the 88" twin cams were.
2) Also no secret TC's run hotter than Evos.
3) The last thing here that is no secret is there is no substitution for cubic inches. Twin cam 88 makes more power than an 80" Evolution motor.
Are you trying to argue that?
I am not running a campaign for or against the Evo motor. You like 'em? I'm happy for you. I do too.

Ahh 8" and twin cams. Less power??
Iused to work with a guy who had FXDWG 98 and 99, him and his wife. Said it ws quite a differece. As you would expect from 8" and twin cams. Nothing wrong with an evo, but don't lie to yourself. Good motor.

Yes agreed, many know these couple things I posted..
Except for the original poster 'gkupris' who innocently asked for opinions..My post is very simply my point. Not trying to rub anyone the wrong way...Just giving more info to him.
Remember it was his question.

I feel my reply was not offensive to anyone, (least it certainly wasn't meant to be) just giving my opinion. (which is known fact)..
Do you really think HD is gonna tell someone that the TC's run Hotter ???
No, their only gonna ask, how U gonna pay ??? ....
So now he knows stock TC's have more power than stock Evo's.
But TC's indeed do run hotter...Which is why HD long ago started making Syn 3 oil for the TC's.. (another known tid-bit)..to most
Just trying to reply to the question..

gkupris-
Congrats on your New '99 Fat Boy. Hope you have many years of enjoyment with it..
Being a '99 Evo, it's the last of the regular production Evo's..
Could be a collector item in time to come. Like a '65 Pan.. or '47 knuck, etc...
If you do some of your own wrenching, you (if ya don't have) should invest in a good HD Service Manual. This is a big help even if you don't wrench. So you can better understand your machine..

Fair enough Buddy. I see the higher temp of the tc as a non issue (I never notice it while riding, just while stopped at a light, I have noticed all of my motorcycles are hot while standing at a traffic signal in the hot sun) but that's me. You're right, some do believe it's a problem and perception is reality.
The smaller exhaust valve (yes it robs power) is also a fact but I don't see it as anything a guy would be unhappy with as he rides the bike down the street. Just another specification to read on a sheet. Not sure why they did that, perhaps to satisfy EPA and/or to cut costs, who knows.
Anyway, I think the Evo is a well proven design and a visually appealing motor in it's own right.
