Adding custom designe to new bike how does it work.

I have a real basic question. I am buying a new bike and want to have some flames or pin striping added.

My question is, can they paint right on top of the factory paint or do they have to strip off all the paint and start from scratch? If they have to totally strip off the paint I may go with a different base color. Or do they just have to take off the clear coat?

depends....

no not that kind of Depends®....does your bike already have striping and or decals under the factory clear? Unless/If you can entirely cover them, you could sand the striping smooth (on the clear coat) as the striping will usually be able to felt (and seen) through the clear...then apply whatever graphics over said striping, and re-clear, color sand & buff, done. Otherwise, sand smooth and re-shoot base coat and do above steps. Hope this helps...Tim

If your current base color is what you like, graphics over the existing color is no problem, I have done flames etc. over existing paint by first scuffing down entire part with 1000 grit , doing the paintwork and then reclearing the whole part(tank fender etc.) to bury the graphics so you can't feel the edges after wetsanding and buffing.
