Was I Robbed? Custom Made Part Gone
I decided to make my own custom air cleaner cover (like Deweys). I picked up a piece of 6061 T6 (6" X6" X 1/2") $17.00, turned it down on my lathe, sanded it, polished it to a mirror finish, it turned out beautiful (should have taken pics). Heres where it gets interesting, I took it to be chrome plated on Wednesday, they tell me $30.00 and should be done in 2 weeks, I say fine. I get a call this mourning from the plater, He says the part was dropped in (fell in)a cleaning tank and is NO LONGER WITH US! meaning its gone. He said they drained the tank to try and retrieve it but it was too late. Am I being told a line of bull sh*t? Can anyone out there in the plating industry tell me if this sounds true? He said he will do whatever it takes to make things right, so he is paying me $100.00 and plating the new one I make free of charge and a one day turn around. Im still pissed

I did somewhat of the same thing since I am running a Wood 325 air filter and it is 8" across, and I did not want to pay $100 for the Wood one, only I used a piece of Polished Stainless, That way I do not have to Chrome it, I have had many compliments on it.

I can understand you being upset but the best test of a company is when they mess up how do they handle the mistake. to me it sounds like they're doing a good job in making things right. that doesn't bring your part back but if it gone, it's gone.

its probably a strong acid tank for
cleaning steel stuff like rusty car bumpers...aluminum would last maybe 60 seconds, max, and after about 5 seconds, ya wouldn't want to see it, it'll be ugly. He's doing the best he can for you.

Hey you could have the next big thing one of the aftermarket companies wants to buy. I didnt get to see it, cause I dont have clearance, but things like that really happen. This guy came up withy the mp3 mount with the twin speakers that can mount on any bike. Drag Specialties paid him a pretty penny for that. There's money to make out there. I'd see if you can patent it and then start showin some of the bigger companies.

If anyone did the copying it was me, although I have never seen one of Deweys in person, this is where I got the idea.

Great job man..I'm running an '89 FLHTP with a stock air cleaner. What I did for mine is remove the cover and gave it to a guy at work who put it on a lathe and he removed like 2" off the side. It looks great and is already chromed.
