Question paint repair

Hello Everyone

I am in need of some advice on touching up paint. I picked up a used set of fiberglass saddlebags that appear to have been dropped. The paint on a couple corners is chipped off. The previous owner touched it up with what appears to be nail polish. I do have the factory color touch up paint. Should I just paint over the nail polish? Or, should I try to sand the area down to the fiberglass and touch up from there??

Thanks for any guidance

I take it you are trying to avoid a complete re-paint. I'd suggest "wet" sanding with a 600 grit or better and attempt the touch up, but not down to the glass if avoidable.

You are correct. The overall paint is in good shape. The areas that I am addressing is about 1/2"-1" long. I thought that it would be best to try and remove the nail polish instead of just touching up over it.

Thanks for the reply

Hey RZ,

Do you know what type of paint the original paintjob is such as Laquer, Urethane, Enamel..ect?? If it's a base coat/clear coat, it will still be visible by using touch up only. Chances are the blemish was touched up by somebody using the touch up bottles you see at the chain auto part stores, which would be laquer most likely. Those touch up tubes have a thick consistency that resembles nail polish due to the little brush applicator.

Good luck!
Gary
