Faded paint under the Tank Emblems

So I just bought this 06 Black Demin SB and in the process of making it mine. Ordered a 2 inch tank lift kit then ran across a picture of another SB with the lift kit install.....The HD Emblem looks like it was about to lift off and go airborn.

So off came emblems only to find the paint had really faded and now there is a semi black Demin HD emblem that just isn't going to cut it either.

So is there any fix to this other than a larger HD Decal to cover the area....Then it would most likely need to be clear coated anyhow.

So while I am having the new front fender painted I almost think it would best to have teh tank done as well.....Seeing as how they are goind to mix the paint to match teh old faded paint. .

How big a deal is it to remove the tank with the Gas Gauge on one side and speedo/idiot lights on the console?

Figure I can remove the tank and have it done the same time as the fender and be happy.

Thanks for any advice.

Are you sure it is faded? The area under the emblems usually stays preserved...ON a gloss paint job, the rest of the paint may be weathered after a while and under the emblems would be glossy still if removed. To fix this, one could wetsand and reclear the whole thing. IT could be possible that yours could be recleared using the flat clearcoat, but if it truly is discolored than it would need to be reshot black first then cleared. While HD uses a powdercoat clear, the finish can be matched using PPG flex n flat clear.

That is what I meant but got it backwards...The paint under the emblems is still good where the exposed paint has faded. After taking the tank console panel off I see the tank has really faded.

After reading the info I found on removing the tank I think I will buy new emblems and make them work now that I have done the 2 inch tank lift.

I think I can make it work and anybody getting close enough to see a little faded might be too close in my thinking.

It does look better with the 2 inch lift thought and you can clean the rockers better.

Took the rear bolt out, propped up the back and clean the rear rocker cover as well.

I am getting the feeling this bike wasn't garaged but keep under a carport at a condo complex/apt conversion and has seen it's share of Utah weather.

Thanks again, KF
