Gas leak

Get on my 04 Road king yesterday morning, stand it up to roll back and fuel comes pouring out. At first I think a line has come loose, but after inspection, i find a nice quarter sized rust spot coming through the bottom of the tank. And it has eaten completely through in a few spots. I have it patched up with some JB weld for the time being and it appears this will work as a temp fix. But my concern is stopping the rust from spreading. Is there a good fix for this? Or should I just pick up a new tank? Anyone got any good sources for new tanks?

i see the bikes black . mask tape around the area cut out tape where rusted- lightly sand with 400 can of primer from paint shop light sand again with 400 shoot gloss black and clear. after that sand with 2000 sand paper under soapy water then wipe wax to buff out- all cans from local paint shop.... don't be scared, very easy, very cheap, and it will seal the area

New tank. You can get them on eBay. I picked up a full paint set for my Night Train that was a dealer take-off when new for $400. If this one is rusting on the outside it's got rust debris on the inside.

I'd be concerned with how the rust got there to begin with...and would still opt for the new tank. You don't need rust cloggin ya up, and you don't need to be ridin and have that jb weld pop off and you start losin gas...

The JB weld is definately a temp fix. Im assuming it is rusting from the inside out. The guy who owned the bike before me rarely rode it. Although it was stored inside, it was not climate controlled. So, maybe a little bit of condensation had formed inside?
Someone has a sweet tank for sale in the classified section, exactly what I need.
Stretched, extra capacity, already painted vivid black. Only problem is, I think I used all my excuses for my wife up in my motor build...
Yup, sure hope this jbweld holds up for a bit, lol.

keep checkin ebay too...you might find the exact same tank OR tell her that a gas leak is a serious potential hazard and you need a replacement right away

Ryan, feel your pain. I just got a new customer. He came in for a cam swap and couple other things. When pulling his tank, noticed his $5k custom painted bike's tank had the same rust hole at the tube the sending unit's wires pass through. Only a drip every few minutes, but replaced the tank. Still waiting for it.

Pat has some good advice here, or just get that stretched tank, they look killer!

Just noticed the stretch is for a street glide, so thats a no go.
There are some oem tanks on ebay right now, not ridiculously priced, but when you factor in having it repainted it gets expensive. Did find one vivid black that was off a rk custom. Anyone know if its the same tank as on a standard?

change of plans. just talked with a fella that said this stuff works really well. For $50 shipped, im thinking its worth a shot. Will either use JB Weld, or the Permatex Gas Leak Sealer on the outer and this stuff to seal the inside. Also gonna try keeping my fingers crossed

Be careful you don't get any sealer on the outside of the tank if you do that...Also, if not applied properly that liner will break down over time....You need to remove the tank, clean and prep as per the instructions, then make sure you get real good coverage on the underside of the top of the tank, so when gas sloshes around it doesn't work its way UNDER the sealer...

I still think you'd be better off swapping tanks - you should be able to fine one on ebay in the $200 range...and then have yours fixed properly and keep it for a spare or even sell it...

I think both the classic and standard have the filler hole on the right and gauge on the left, so you should be ok with the tank...just be sure if you have an FI tank than you get an FI tank...

Well, I ended up not doing the patch job. Didnt wanna just put a band aid on something and have another problem at the most inoportune time. I shopped around and shopped around and everything I saw for a decent price was still going to have to be painted to match my bike. Well I spoke with Pat (kustom flames) and he made a very generous offer. I ended up with a like new tank, and had him paint it as well. Just wanna say I couldnt be happier with the outcome of this. And Pat is a stand up guy, to help me get my bike back up. And done right. Heres just a quick pic as I was dodging rain drops trying to finish it off.

Thanks again Pat.
