Hey Chuck! Actually PPG is more than HOK in alot of places. I recommend the PPG shopline primer - JP202. It lays down flatter than any other primer I have ever used, and unless you ride your bike in the snow, you do not need an epoxy primer. The PPG harlequin blew the doors off the HOK I used. Similar, but it did seem to change a few more shades than the HOK one I used. BUT, that goes for about $50/ounce and I think you have to buy the whole thing at 6oz, unless your PPG supplier will sell you some of theirs... I also just switched out from HOK UC35 clear to the PPG DBC8152 Glamour Clearcoat. The PPG clears give way more depth in less coats than the HOK. I had a tank side by side, one that had 8 coats of UC35 on it and the other with 4 coats of the PPG - PPG looked deeper. The PPG clear will also run you twice as much...
If you are going to use PPG and HOK, use the SAME reducer throughout - whether it be HOK or PPG, and you should be fine. Be careful with the HOK BC25 black - that one seemed to be finicky to me, though the PPG DBC9700 will cost you about $30 more. Do not buy the PPG shop line black - it is not a deep enough black!
The PPG clear I mentioned does not come in quarts, so you would have to buy a gallon setup, which will run you more than $400! You can ask them about the 2042, which you can buy in quarts....
I really like the PPG line, and IMO it is worth the extra money. PPG supplies the paints for HD. Hope all that helps...
Pat
