I need a painter

Can anyone recommend a good painter in the Augusta GA area, or at least within a hundred miles or so. I see a lot of painters on this forum, but you guys are so far away. I'm looking for someone local who can do repair work to HDs. I don't want to buy a new tank because I have a dime size ding in it, it should be repairable. The local bodyshops cringe at bike parts, and look at the colors like its the first time they have ever seen paint! Most of the recommendations I get are for some guy who does this on the side in his backyard......and you all know the outcome from these situations. Lets just say, I haven't been impressed with what they say they can do, let alone what they have shown me they did!
I see many sweet custom jobs on this site, I'm just looking to retain my stock appearance.

If you have a stock paint job on it now, why not just buy a stock tank off ebay and then sell your old one? That way you don't lose ride time...just my 2 cents.

Sure it may be repairable...but you may be get $150 or so on ebay for yours with the dent. Now if you can get a near perfect one for $250-300, than it might be cheaper than having someone fill the ding and repaint. Not to mention if you have to buy new decals that will set you back $60-100 in most cases...

So, this is for the 96 fatboy I assume? This may be even easier for you if you can find just a left or a just a right side tank, which you run into on ebay almost all the time. You failed to mention what color too...that could be a difference in the cost of a paint job as well, especially if it is 2tone, or a tri-stage application...

That's an idea, I'll keep watching ebay for one.
The tank is vivid black with red pinstripes and the Fatboy decal. The ding is in the top of the tank by the filler neck, about 3 inches from the pinstripe. It wouldn't be a big deal any where else on the bike, its just that every time I look down, I see it. It just seems like it shouldn't be a big deal to have it fixed.

That should be fairly easy to find...or if you do have to have repainted, I think the fatboy decals might be only about $40 or so for the pair...the red pinstripe paint you can get thru HD in a touchup form for about $11 a bottle. Usually you need the dealer to special order it and it may take 2-3 weeks...

It's not a real big deal to fix...it 'may' be able to be done without having to reshoot the entire thing and get decals, pinstripe paint, etc....but repairs are often almost as time consuming as a redo.

You could bring it to a local painter and see what they say - maybe go to your local HD dealer and see if they work with any custom painters who may be able to do repairs...

Thanks for the tip, although he is kind of far from me, about 3 hour ride. I was looking for some one closer if at all possible. It looks like I'll be making a road trip.

The guy that FXR2 recommended.........Beyond The Paint, I've heard of these guys, but the number is disconnected. I even rode by, and coundn't find the address. Found Frontage road no problem, but no 4282, the google map shows them in an industrial park that is still being built (the name of that raod is not frontage). Augusta has the strangest road layout.

Anyway, the search continues.

Thanks for all the help!

Sorry for the dead end. I talked to those guys not quite a year ago about a small paint/graphics job so I know that they were there at that time. The even had a website. Anyway, I guess they've gone out of business.

[edit to add:] They still have a website, but a different phone number. Might be worth another try. The website has a map to their shop. Good luck.

Thanks for the help guys,

I went by the harley shop earlier, they recommend Jim as well, gave me directions to his shop. (I was within 100 ft. of it before and didn't see it) He is just what I am looking for. He had a shop full of work, but he can squeeze mine in, pretty reasonable price I might add.

Bluzmn59, is that some of his work? I really like the hot rod flame look. The reflections in the tank tell me the shine is really deep. After looking around his showroom, I don't know if I want to stay stock now. Man, all kinds of sweet eye candy (paint wise) for your bike.

I told him about being so hard to find, he relies on word of mouth to advertise. He said when he advertises, he gets a bunch of tire kickers who only want to talk about paint jobs. By being off the beaten path, only the ones who really want his services find him. It seems to be working for him, and the harley people highly recommend him.

Thanks for everyones help, I'll be without my bike for a few days, but that annoying ding is going to be gone.

Yes, my Springer is his work - hot rod flames outlined in blue pinstriping, all done by hand. Photos don't really do it justice. And he will be getting my Street Glide sometime after the first of the year.
