Question about black pearl

Hi every one...

My 2005 deluxe is black pearl... There is blue, red, purple, green flakes every where on the bike, gas tank, rear fender, and front fender but only on the sides, not on the top, and throught the bottom at the lower part, and ity cover a bit narrower between the 2 burgandy line from each side.

The previous owner claim he never touch or crash the bike or repaint anything on it. The fender don't look like it's been repaint, but I am no expert...

I would like to know if those of you you got a softail 2005 black pearl if you have all those different color flake on top of the fender or not. Mine is like silver flake only, you know, like when the sun doesn't hit the paint in the right angle so the flake doesn't showes, or on a cloudy day...

I have tried to place the bike in different position to the sun and it is only those on the side of the fender that reflect...

Can it be a manufactured defect, or was there ever a recall for that problem ????

I didn't had the chance to see an other black pearl 2005 to compare and I know that later model seem to have lost these flake ...

DTM...

It could be that there is different flakes in the pearl. For instance the deep cobalt pearl has a lot of red flake in it, which makes it very cool. However that color should be uniform, not just on the sides or tops. Have you taken a bright led flashlight to the paint, real close to see if you can detect it? It may be the way that it catches the light...

Tough to give reasons without seeing it for myself...

Hi kustom...

i will try it tonight, my wife got a led flashlight in her SUV....(at work now)

But my guest is : if I can see them on the tank and on the rear fender, i should see them on top of the fender at the same moment that I see them on the sides...

In theory yes. Sometimes the flake only shows when direct light hits it, so if the light is on the top parts of your bike...then maybe the flake on the sides does not show as much. Ghost flames work the same way...

IMHO it is definately the angle of your sight line compared to the angle of the light hitting the surface, as for the colors, the ppg mix for that color (and many other HD) use a pearl that is specific to HD only.

I bet when the bike was new, the dealer charged him for two-tone paint!
