tins: fill holes or new tins?
I am thinking about new paint after some motor work, pretty simple one color, old panhead blue, I would like to remove all the trim from fenders, and all passanger seat holes, but looking at what is wanted price wise for filling holes...and I have a bunch of them on a 2007 deluxe...
would it be a better idea to just get new smooth tins?

I would say fill them yourself with lead, file it down and let your body guy do the rest. The lead wont crack or expand and contract as much as plastic will in winter or summer.

Yeah I do think you could save yourself some work.
Keep the stock tins .. stock and put em away just in case.
Tins are cheap.. pick out some that you like, shoot some paint on em and your ready to go.

This one all depends on your budget. If I had the cash, I'd just buy some new tins, but if money was an issue, I'd fill the holes and have them repainted.

It is defiantly better to get new tins, but if you get a quality paint job, the painter needs to strip the fenders down to bare metal any ways. Welding all the holes shut is not a lot of work and will cost less than new tins.
Let us give you a free cost estimate for this project, we might be able to save you some change. We can weld all the holes from both sides and then apply a thick rubber based under coating to protect the fenders from corrosion. All this can be done at a reasonable rate, together with the paint job.
Please visit us on the Sponsor section of Forums page, we have a lot of tips and ideas on choosing the right painter.

I would be looking at a new, smooth style front fender without the holes. Yes, you can have the holes welded, but if you do not use a top notch welder, your fender will get warped from the heat and will be a bodywork nightmare. Could easily cost as much, if not more than a new fender.
You could check out Sumax, Klockwerks, and other mfgs, as well as pricing out a smooth style from HD. Also check on ebay...
No need to buy a new tank, since you already have...though if you did get all new tins, you could either sell your old set or keep as a spare.

I should also add, that the metal one the sides of those fender is sometimes pretty thin and filling the holes can sometimes lead to creating a bigger hole due to the heat.....still fixable, but another risk. I am not saying it can't be done....but there are a few things that could cause more work for your bodyguy, resulting in a bigger bill for you.
Lastly, I mentioned a few aftermarket options. Sumax being a composite will not require bodywork (may require drilling holes to fit to your bike) but most aftermarket stuff does need some amount of bodywork to get smooth and ready for paint.
Ok, just didn't want to miss anything...

You are off to the + side.
You should be able to get that (the prep / painting) for under 800 bucks.

I think 1k is about right...but it will depend on your painter and what the avg rate is in that area. Prices can be all over the place, but you pretty much get what you pay for....there is not much I will do personally for less than $1000, but some people might...
