Please explain Candy?
What is meant by this term? How does it differ from pearl for example?

I'm sure some of the painters in here can explain it in more detail, but it's basically a 2-stage paint job (3 if you count the clear coat). The base coat is usually Silver but can be gold or all kinds of other colors, usually metal flake. Then the "Candy" coat is the color coat but the paint is translucent, meaning you can see through it and see the effect of the base coat underneath.
Probably one of the most mis-used terms in custom car paint jobs is the "Candy Apple" term everyone uses for a candy paint job... even if it's green or blue I have heard people call it candy apple.

Yup, basically correct. However, HOK uses 12 different metallic basecoats under their kandies, which will give 12 different shades. Kandies are basically translucent and need a metallic base under to show, so if you were to paint a kandy over black, it would look black. Basically it is considered a tri-stage application - meaning base, mid (kandy) and clear.
Pearls generally can be tri-stage too, and usually go over a white basecoat. I might have made mention to you before, but you should check out HOK kandy cobalt. It will be less expensive than HD, and let me tell ya one hell of a nice color!

Now I understand my paint job better..HOK Kandy Blue and Kandy Purple. Express Blue pinstriping. The base is silver with tiny metal flake. Also marbelized..however they do that. Painted by Carl Betz at "Colormania" in '96. Is still like new.
Pictures are low res cuz I don't know how to get better ones in here. This paint is much better than the pictures show.

Marblizer is super easy - shoot black base (sometimes white) and then shoot marblizer. In your case, they used the silver, and shot one coat of it. This basically is a very slow drying paint, so you lay down some saran wrap over it, and then remove which creates a pattern. It's a pretty neat effect...

That's wild! The shadows really kick off a beautiful paint job. Makes the flames seem to be two inches off the surface.

The tank is solid black in the front...the flames come out of the black...with a couple of coats of Meguire's Gold the paint just looks real wet and deep. The flames really do seem to be several inches above the paint because of the painter's skill with the air brush and the shading. The paint seems to be blue OR purple depending on the lighting and angle. I will say this...when this bike is parked anywhere, people come over to examine the paint. I am told it won Best in Show at the 1996 "Hot Harley Nights" in Sioux Falls, S.D. at J&L Harley....but the first owner won't give up any trophies. Doesn't matter to me but I like knowing the history. I was told that by the second owner....the same guy who sent me a bell when I contacted him to find out what cam was in the bike. Sorry to ramble on.
I will get my son-in-law to show me how to include a higher resolution picture soon.

Thanks guys.
kustom_flames - you did indeed mention HOK candy cobalt. I checked it out and loved it - but my painter can't get/doesn't deal in HOK.

Can't get? Seems odd that a painter wouldn't deal with HOK....perhaps he is most comfortable using PPG...BUT anyone can buy HOK online thru coastairbrush or TCP Global.
You may also ask him if he could get COLOR HORIZONS by SEM. They basically took all the HOK colors and came out with that line.
Also, if he deals DuPont I believe they have a line called Hot Hues, and if he does do PPG, then look in Vibrance!
ALL paint mfgs are going to have a nice kandy blue...
Good luck!

Thanks!! He is a Standox guy (believe that's Dupont). I'll have to bring up the Hot Hues line.

Just another crazy thought for the guy...but he could use whichever metallic base he wants - silver, gold, or light blue work well under cobalt, and then pick up some HOK kandy concentrate and mix that right into whichever clear he uses and should be all he needs to do....
That kandy concentrate is only about $30/pt. Anyways, hope you guys figure somethin out...

Pat, had my parts shot a week ago and the painter used silver base, two coats of candy using HOK Kandy Red Concentrate (IIRC the part number was KS11), then one coat of PPG Vibrance Candy Red top coat, and two coats of clear. The color is incredible--great depth (looks like I could swim in it), plenty of sparkle (but well short of "bass boat"), and just a bit of flop to make it interesting.
I've been reassembling the bike so I don't have pics outside, yet. And he ran out of the HOK concentrate so my fairing lowers, an extra tour pak and back-up outer fairing (which will get an airbrushed design if I can just make up my mind what I want) will be shot later.
My original plan for a secondary color with striping was scrapped because: (a) the color was so incredible, and (b) the color wouldn't work with the secondary color I'd planned to use as the color came out a darker shade than I'd originally expected. Rather than try to "figure out" a plan B while the painted parts were in the booth, decided to leave the my EG a single color until I can decide on what to do next.
The stencils from Ron for the gas tank didn't get to me in time, so I'll pull the gas tank and have that done along with the other parts in a week or two.

Hi Steveusmc,
You mentioned your bike was painted by a Carl Betz at "Colormania" in '96;
I think you have some wrong information my friend; I am Colormania and the one who painted your bike. No one by the name Carl Betz ever worked for me.
I'm glad you are happy with your paint job.

Cory,
Received your PM. Thanks very much. I was told by a person in here quite awhile ago that the painter's name was Carl. Made sense because of the circle with a C inside signed on the tank. I am very happy to actually know know who painted my bike in 1996.....I didn't buy the bike until 2004. I have been bragging on Colormania for YEARS....and never knew who you really were. Thanks for getting me straight....I think your work is unparalleled.
Semper Fi,
Steve

Guys..check out this operation:
http://www.colormaniapaint.com/
6 facilities here in the states..and now we know where most of those custom and very limited paint sets come from that are on many thousands of Harleys nationwide and around the world.
Just surf around the website and you will see a LOT of very impressive work.
