Question Primer Color Question

I will be painting all the plastic and tins on my Electra Glide and the high fill primer I have for the tins is a red oxide color and the only plastic primer I could find is white. The color I will be painting is a red metallic. What I need to know is will using two different color primers make the finished color look a little different and if so should I shoot a coat of the red oxide primer over the white plastic primer on the plastic parts?? Thanks for any info on the subject.

I"m not a painter.
However I do not think it will affect you final color.
I'm under the impression that with metallic colors your final color is predicated by the base color you shoot over the primer. Back in the day a blue metallic was primer, then silver metallic, then blue over the silver.
but these days it likely is a one part paint with a clear coat.
This may not help but if figured i'd throw it out there to try to help.

I'll be interested to see what some of the paint pro's post to this.

good luck

Ok first, you can use a plastic adhesion promoter, such as bulldog. Then a flexible primer of any color can be used over that.

I think with a red metallic you will be ok no matter what is underneath. Base colors come more into play when using pearls. For instance a light pearl such as white, yellow, orange, will probably be a shade different if going over say black and white. In fact they recommend a white base....

What you are going over now, is it ABS in its raw state or already painted? If already painted, chances are you can scuff that clear, prime, and shoot your red metallic, and you do not need a plastic primer....

Thanks for the info. The plastic parts had been painted before but they had some cracks and deep scratches in them from an accident so I pretty much sanded them down to bare plastic. Thats why I wanted to use the plastic primer on them. I am going to use a auto red metallic and clear coat for the final color.

OK. So, I suppose you can use the plastic primer. I just use the bulldog then my regular primer, but a plastic primer should work as well. The prep on plastic parts is the most crucial to ensure a long lasting paint job. Any paint will stick to the surface in teh beginning, but w/o the right prep, it will not last...

I agree with Kustom flames kinda, the lighter the color the more coats you will get to achieve the col,or your looking for. I have been painting for 20+ years and if i have my choice the grey or yellow is the way that I go.
