FXD tank Bung

Hey folks,

Pat, are you out there??? I was filling my bike today and saw that the sealed edge (paint to raw aluminum) at the top of the fill bung is seperating in little tiny pieces. It does not appear to be the paint. I have an aftermarket pop up gas cap and as superglide owners know the bung is recessed down a bit into the dash so it does not show. As an extra precaution when using an aftermaket gas cap, I put a couple of coats of clear nail polish on this edge many many years ago. I believe thats what's lightly peeling. I see no paint flakes or bubbles. My concern is if the fumes are getting to the nail polish, will it also get to the factory paint. Should I clean it up and reapply the nail polish or use something else, or nothing at all? I changed the cap gasket. Thanks All!
Hope the weather is treating everyone better these llast days of summer. It's finally beautiful here!

Hey Rick! You can always email me direct bro! But anyways....most likely it is just the clear finger nail polish that is cracking.

The way HD has the recessed bungs, you really needn't worry. The nail polish isn't impervious to gasoline, which is why the fumes may be causing that to happen.

You could double check to make sure your gaskets are good...replacing those can be a good idea if they are starting to harden up...

But honestly, you really should have nothing to worry about it. The recessed area should be bare metal so the gasket can 'seal', so if the nail polish was applied there it probably got compromised...

Finally some great weather here lately, too!

Pat

Hey Pat,
Your a busy guy....Don't like to unnecessarily bother anyone with trivial stuff like cracked nail polish ....Thanks though Pat, thats the only issue and just what has happened. I cleaned off the chipping nail polish and the paint is still rock solid. I guess all is fine...Nice riding weather here finally. Rode without getting wet for an entire week straight...I almost forgot what that was like!
