MCC rebuild, initial impressions

Well, I have had my seat back from Mean City Cycles for about two weeks now. Due to work travel and family obligations, I have only been able to ride on the new seat a couple of times. The mods I had done included the standard memory foam for the seat, and wide double decker passenger pillion. Seat was the stock one piece seat on my '03 Road Glide.

Our first ride was for around 100 miles, and on our return I remarked that I couldn't tell a big difference over stock. My butt was still a bit sore, though I could still walk. My wife, however, loved the mods to the passenger pillion. She said that her butt wasn't the least bit sore, and she also noticed that her inner thighs were no longer cramping like on the old seat. Figuring I needed to give the seat a bit more break in time, I decided to withold judgement...

Before the next ride I managed to reinstall my Mustang rider backrest. This ride was for close to 200 miles or so, and this time there was a noticeable improvement from my perspective. The wife still loved the way the passenger portion felt, and I was not nearly as sore as on the previous ride. I suspect that, like the Mustang Wide Vintage Touring seat that I had on my Sportster, after a bit more breaking in this seat will be perfect. At this point I have no regrets about the MCC mods at all. In fact, I am very pleased so far.

I do have one complaint, but it has nothing to do with the mods. I am still getting a bad case of monkey butt on very hot days, which I attribute to the vinyl seat cover. I am thinking that maybe a sheepskin will help?

A sheepskin can help, but isn't always perfect. There are different powders out there, but I don't want to powder my butt everytime I go for a ride.

You can try a sheepskin from alaska leather
They have good prices and a good product.

I would suggest changing underwear. I went with LD Comfort underwear and they are great. No more seams and the sweat goes away quick. No more monkeybutt. Expensive but great. I think this is the best way to go.

Thanks for the suggestion! I don't really want to powder my ass everytime I go for a ride either, but those are some expensive underpants! Do you feel that they are worth the price? I guess if it wicks away moisture that efficiently, then maybe they are worth the price.

Second on LD comforts. I tried bike shorts, sheepskin, quick-dry underwear... always got monkey butt especially when it was hot... until these guys here recommended LD comfort. Im amazed that they actually work very well. rode 9 hours to Laconia last month and they felt great!

Oh, got my seat on its way back in the mail from MCC. They told me it takes a good 800 to 1000 miles of seat time till they become comfortable as designed. You might need to give it a few more long rides. Got the double decker memory foam on both seats, plus added the wide foam on the passenger... Long road trip coming up next week...

I'm on the fence... but with the insane heat we have been having in Houston, and of all of Texas actually, this might push me over the edge.....

Thumbs up

Got the sundowner back from MCC last week. Had the memory foam added to the entire seat plus widened 2" on the passenger pillion. The wife has not ridden yet but just from touch and sitting on the seat in the shop she loves it. I have ridden a couple hundred miles now and there is a noticeable difference. I used to feel the frame jolt me when I hit a bump, now I can feel the soft spongy feel of the foam. Keep in mind I have ridden the stock sundowner for 58,000 miles so this seat feels different with the extra padding, I've just got to get used to the different feel/shape of the seat. Was it worth the $? IMHO it was. The true test will be known by the end of Sept, I've got two trips totaling 9-10,000 miles and I'll know after that! Now all I need is the Progressive 440's and I should have the perfect ride.

Having put a few hundred more miles on my MCC rebuilt stocker, I can say that I agree with you about it being money well spent. In addition to the seat, I also added Khrome Werks #300504 Tall Wide Sweeper handlebars, and my bike is now every bit as comfortable as I hoped that it would be when I bought it. My right hand doesn't go numb anymore like it did with the stock bars!
