WTB: A big bike for $5000 or less
I know I'm asking a lot here, but help a fellow enthusiastst out! I have about 5K to work with. I'm looking for late 70's or early 80's FX, any softail, or what do you possibly have? Needs to be an HD. Of course, not in the best condition given what I can afford. NO SPORTSTERS! Loved my sporty, but time to move on. Thanks.

That's gonna be tough man, old shovels are becoming collectors items. Hard to find cheap anymore, even for basket cases. When I bought my bike restored shovels were going for as much or more than TC88s...

Uh-h-h-h, going to have to agree with Shaw on this call. I've looked at a few older AMF bikes recently so standing upright and some scattered in boxes/tubs for that amount BUT was going to take another $3,000-$4,000 to get them ridable.
Good luck fellow...think you're going to need it.
Hey, noticed you live in Illinois. I'm up here right now to go with all my riding buddies to the big indoor swapmeet this weekend. They use to have it at McCormick Place but moved it this year to a big convention center out off 355. Put your $$$$ in your back pocket and go...ya never know. There were a lot of bikes inside and outside last year for sale.

Thanks for the replys so far. Texan, I've been hearing about a big bike show this weekend, I'm maybe 25 miles away from anywhere off 355. DO you know the name of the swap meet?
I've got an eye on an 82 superglide, it has a few thousand on the topend and about 130K on the bottom. That many miles makes me worry a little bit. The guy is asking 5500 obo.

Deals do exist out there, especially from guys who are tied up in the mortgage mess. Look at this Indian for $5k:
http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/mcy/601112447.html
I'm seeing some twin cam models listed on CL for less than 9k, that's only going to drive down prices on older models like Evo's and Shovels. Cash can really talk in this economy.

I actually called the guy figuring my brother might be interested, the guy lives near me. He sounded legit and just needed the money asap. I didn't go to see it though but he said he really babied it.

keep checking your local paper, craigslist, and the online cycle trader
have your cash in hand and ready and be patient and you will find your deal.

You guys are looking in the wrong places. Shovelheads ARE NOT collector's items (yet)! Decent 78-84's going for under $6k all day long on ebay and other places. Good buddy sold his 1980 fx stroker last year in awesome shape, took almost a year and finally setteled for $5500
Checxk this out, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1980-...QQcmdZViewItem
and this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1981-...QQcmdZViewItem
another http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Super...QQcmdZViewItem
and another http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HARLE...QQcmdZViewItem
Collector's items indeed! If I had one, I'd call it a collector's item too....
