Route 66 Camping?

This May (2017) I'm doing a east coast to west coast cross country tip. I hope to ride a lot of Route 66 beginning in Missouri and then out to Los Angeles. I'll be camping much of the way and was hoping someone could recommend a resource (printed, on line, phone app, etc.) that provides information on free or low cost campgrounds for tent camping on or near Route 66, or the entire country for that matter.

I'm hoping to find basic, overnight facilities that offer restrooms, showers, etc. Don't need anything fancy. Just basic areas that are safe and secure.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Driven most of it and ridden a bunch of it but spent my money on motels and didn't camp. That said, you will have an adventure ahead of you, so many cool things to see. I hope weather agrees with you. Have a great (and safe) trip!

Thanks! i've already accepted the fact that on a coast to coast trip some weather will be fantastic, some will be ok and some will really, really suck! all part of the deal i guess. i'm really looking forward to it. it will be my first chance to travel when, since i'm now retired, the calendar will mean nothing.

thanks! thought of KOA. I've used them twice in Hill City, SD as a base camp while at Sturgis. I'm just trying to find out what other options might be available.

DoomBuggy wants to know Dino or Syn?
I can't really help much with the camping. Although this may help. http://www.route66news.com/campgrounds/

I would like to suggest the book "Roadside Americana" by Witzel and Steil. It is a guide to a lot of the truly historic stops along Rt66.

I rode in my parents back seat between Chicago and Az many times as a kid. Now my wife and I are exploring little pieces of it and are using the book as suggestions on where to stop.

I took this picture last winter when we were out there. It is in Shamrock, TX. The trivia bit is that it was used as the inspiration for one of the buildings in the first Cars Movie.

I love Hill City. Ever camp Horse thief? I used to spend whole summers up in the Black Hills. Spearfish Canyon, the Needles, Pecker Rock, Pactola Reservoir, Sheridan Lake, and of course Deadwood/Lead...

Lots of trails and off-shoots in state parks and other state regulated areas where tent camping is legal. I know you're not talking about SD; but other states are similar. The issue is that pit fires are usually prohibited and - of course - the only facilities are what nature provides. Bring an E-Tool.

I tend toward State Park camping areas on long trips. They usually have a primitive area in the back of the camp spots that still allow you access to showers.
