My Road Trip from Mississippi to New Jersey and back

Gents,

Here are some pictures from my trip I took at the end of last month. I did 3100 miles in total. I did the trip over 7 days (3 days for the trip up and 4 days for the trip back - 1 day to play at Deal's Gap). I made a side trip to visit my brother in Richmond, VA before heading up to NJ. The total trip was 14 days. States visited: Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

Without further delay, here are some of the pictures I took.

A picture of the Cherohala Skyway. I went the long way up to Richmond so that I could ride the Skyway. I planned to hit both the Skyway and the Tail of the Dragon on the way back:

Cherohala Skyway:

Almost a mile high on the Skyway:

I stayed at the Two Wheel Inn in Robbinsville, NC. I liked it so much, I wound up staying there on the way back as well:

Here is a picture of the motel I stayed at in Front Royal, VA. It was only about a mile from the start of Skyline Drive:

The start of Skyline Drive in VA. Its about 105 miles long, the speedlimit is set at 35 (due to wildlife), and the price to get in is $10.00 (for motorcycles - its a state park). It was well worth it. AND there was quite a bit of it. I actually had to stop for a couple of minutes due to 4 bears in the roadway (no I didn't get pictures - I was more worried about myself ).

Skyline Drive:

The tunnel on Skyline Drive. Very cool landmark.

Getting up there in elevation on the Skyline Drive. I wish I had video, the fog was pretty cool as it moved from left-to-right in the picture:

Another picture from Skyline Drive:

That night I stayed at the Best Western in Johnson City, TN. The Akron, OH H.O.G. chapter was in town for a trip of their own. Turns out I ran back into them (well passed them) on HWY 74 in North Carolina. You can see their bikes in the background.

Back at the Two Wheel Inn:

Rode the Cherohala Skyway again:

And stopped into the Thunder Mountain General Store to get a couple of T-Shirts - turns out, its for sale (I think for around $599,000):

Of course, I HAD to ride Deal's Gap/Tail of the Dragon/US129:

Pictures of me on the Tail of the Dragon (pictures either by Moonshinephoto or Killboy):

Finally, I had to get a picture in front of the Two Wheel Inn sign before I headed back home :

All in all, it was a great trip. The only issue I had with the bike was the muffler coming loose. I tightened it up, but had a mild exhaust leak for the remainder of the trip. I'd also like to thank the folks at South Richmond Harley Davidson in Richmond, VA as well as the folks at Kosco Harley Davidson in NJ for their time. They made the trip that much better.

Hope everyone enjoys the pictures!!!

Dave

I'm from there originally. I grew up there, although I havent lived there in 12 years. My father still lives there and it was an excuse to go see him.

Great pics Dave. Thanks for sharing them with us. Can't help but notice your bike always looks clean. I go out for a day, and my windshield and lights are covered in bugs.

LMAO!!! My buddies always tell me the same thing. I always give it a quick wipedown after I'm done riding for the day, but in most of those pictures, I had ridden through the rain just before. It was raining or misting on the Cherohala Skyway for almost the entire ride. There are bugs on it, I guess they just dont show up in the pics.

Thumbs up

Great trip there Dave! Awesome pics to boot! If you did not ride the BlueRidge Pkwy you should, IMHO it is better than the Skyline. JMO

I didn't get a chance to Ride the BRP, but I wanted to. I know it picks up right at the end of Skyline Drive, but I hopped on 64 instead because I wanted to do Deal's Gap.

Hey, this way it gives me an excuse for next year!!

Great trip, nice pics! Nice lookin scooter!

Hats off to you for doin the entire Skyline, the 35 mph gets to me and I can only do a section or two at a time and haven't done that for a couple years.

The bear encounters are quite commom these days even in residential areas. Couple weeks ago my assistant's 90 year old mother in-law, who lives on a road paralleling the Drive, chased a bear off her back porch with a broom, fearless lady!

Thanks for all your help with the PM's a few weeks back. By the way, that was the closest I've ever been to a bear ever!!

About the bears

You did the right thing keeping your distance. Four bears together probably means mother and cubs, a dangerous combination. I was telling my assistant your story, her daughter works at the park. Seems there has been a sow and three cubs being a nuisance all Summer around Elkwallow, mile 24.1, there is a visitor center there picnic area and gift shop, I believe. Maybe your four!

North Section Map here

Glad to be able to provide some help, small as it may be.

I can't remember where it was. I believe it happened before the tunnel, but I can't remember. It wasnt the only wildlife I saw, there were quite a bit of deer, but deer can't maul the hell out of you......
