Dragon Warning
Tenn Road crews are putting new asphalt on the sides of the DRAGON on the SB side - Hvy equipment and flaggers are out in the roadway.
Fresh oil from the equipment is being tracked out on the road so use extreme caution.

Just rode the Dragon this weekend I didn't see to much oil on the road but it could get worse.

I thought I wanted to ride the dragon a few years ago but after reading about all the BS with the cops and a-holes racing through it, I have no desire to do it!! There's plenty of other great places to go.

Awe Dan don't let what you read cloud up a great ride and a great memory. Just go on a weekday. It's a nice road. Plenty of other roads in the area that are nearly as good too!

If the Dragon is too much for you, come to Nebraska. Just like the Dragon, almost -- 318 miles, 11 curves.

Yeah, I've been through Nebraska a couple of times. I took one picture. Whenever anyone asks me what Nebraska is like I show it to them and tell to stare at that for 8 hours!

There's a big Bicycle tour there this weekend . I've ridden it a dozen times, it is better in the fall and mid week , less crazies. The Cherohala Skyway , and Hellbender , and the Nantahala gorge are all great rides in the area , as well as the BRP.

Actually... if you stay the hell off the Interstate, there is some really great scenery and some nice roads. I-80 is NOT the way to see anything. We found that to be the case in Germany too, by the way... if you stay on the Autobahn you're missing all the good stuff.
From Omaha, take 92 west to the start of the Loup River Scenic Byway. Follow that to the Sandhills Scenic Byway, which will take you to Alliance - stop by Carhenge just so you can say you saw it. Ride up to Chadron, see some spectacular country. From there you can ride north into South Dakota, ending up in Keystone and Rapid City. It's not the Dragon, but it's a hell of a nice ride in its own right.

I've done both.
I-80 through Nebraska is quite boring, but you gotta love the 75mph speed limit! Stayed in downtown Lincoln. Loved it, and would go back in a heartbeat. The air out west is unmistakably FRESH, Crisp!, and CLEAN! Call me crazy, but the storm systems are also much more beautiful to watch than they are in the midwest. You just gotta plan ahead.
Of course, The dragon is from another planet, as it is a world away from "stress free" riding. Leave your ego at home, Don't wave, don't ride it on the weekends. and assume every blind curve is sharp....because they are!!
My opinion, you gotta do it at least ONCE, as it is one of the most technical roads in all of motorcycling. I've done the dragon several times, in both directions. The big secret being, that the surrounding roads are MUCH more enjoyable on a Harley.

I just got back from a trip to the Dragon and the surrounding area. I agree with some other posters that it is worth the trip to ride it at least once. We ended up on a lot of Interstate down and back due to time, but it is great motorcycle riding territory once you get there.
