Great Smokey Mountains Bike Week
June 17-21, 2009 Siversville
Just wondered if anybody has gone to it, and if so what is a "must do" while there.
This will be my first trip to TN. and I plan on hitting the Cherholoo Skyway and the Dragon with the Devil's Triangle for sure.

GJarrett - Thanks for the heads up- From what I've able to gather their will be a bunch running through there starting on the 7th of thru 11 May. The sponsers of GSMBW are lining up tours twice a day - morning and afternoon. Some body mentioned that the crowds will be in the thousands; so it will be real interesting. I just hope nobody gets stupid, cause I'm sure LEO will be out in force.

Too much territory to be hung up on a guided tour.. Self touring this particular part of the world can't be beat.
Thousands ?? Dunno, but there's always a ton of bike in these parts on nice weekends..There's so much road though, it doesn't seem like too much.
LEO? Heard the suck factor is right up there at the Dragon, but my experience in the rest of the area is that if you behave, you'll be fine.
Stupid? -- Yupper there's more than a few squids about and yes they act like idiots.. As long as you check your mirrors OFTEN..and have acute situational awareness, you'll be fine.

We live in TN and have the Smokies on our list for this year. Larry is riding for a long time, but I am a beginner (August last year - 4000 miles) and am still a little uncomfortable on the interstate with the tractor trailers. They are usually too fast for me to pass, and too slow to stay behind. But I understand that I have to do it again and again and get used to it.
So yes, we are planning on setting up our both during that Bike Week. So come and see us, and lets hang out.
Looking forward to meet you guys.

Rode down to my daughter and grandkids last August. They live close to the dragons tail. Beautiful ride you’ll love it.

My brother and I went to the North Carolina side last Memorial Day. Rode the Dragon, the Cherohala and some other roads (NC Hwy 28 is great). Fantastic area for riding.
What is the Devil's Triangle?? Haven't heard of it and would like to check it out on our next trip.
******Never mind. Went to the Smoky Mtn. Bike Week website and found some info on the Devil's Triangle. Definitely sounds like a fun ride.*****
Thanks,
BK

Sarge7, If you haven't been to the dragon (and surrounding area), do yourself a favor and avoid it Friday through Sunday. It's a real cluster f*#k. Hwy 28 is a beautiful ride all the way from Robbinsville, NC down to Highlands, NC. The dragon is a ball but it's only 11 miles long and can get a little boring after 2 or 3 time in 1 trip. You have to watch not only yourself but everyone else on the road. Lots of blind corners and lots of folks crossing the double yellow lines. School buses and tractor trailers take up both lanes on tight corners.

The better half and I are going down on the 4th and do a little sightseeing in advance of the rush. Possible I'll go before the crowd gets there. I do like a party but would pefer to ride in a small group or by my lonesome. I got all summer to do it in. -Retired - Them big rigs don't bother me none; drove for years; just fiqure if I see one let him have the road. Saw some of the videos on the web site and still can't fiqure out why any driver would want to run that road in a 18 wheeler unless he's a rookie and don't know any better. If the wife doesn't holler to much, I'm going to check hiway 28 to. I checked all the maps I could find on that area and I'm looking foreward to bringing home a lot of good memories of this trip.

Hwy 28 is pretty awesome way past Highlands all the way down into South Carolina. There's so many great roads in this area you can't go wrong.

Think I'm going to extend my vacation time in that area; just to be able to ride all the roads around there.

I live in the area, and would advise not bothering with the Dragon, its just a total cluster most of the time, especially on the weekends. WAY too many idiots on crouch rockets, trying to be full race wannabes, slow cars and trucks, lots of PoPo, too crowded, not worth all that in my opinion living around there. The "Triangle" is nothing much, nice country, it encompases a series of roads that on the map forms roughfully a triangle of sorts. Its located about 40 miles west of the Smokies in a rural area of east Tn. not a lot to see, very remote area, pretty ride though.
