Ear Plugs?
Anyone know of quality ear plugs for wind noise / general exhaust noise?

Any of the foam earplugs you find at your local drug store or Walmart will work fine. What you want to look for is the NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) number -- the higher the better. Some people like Hearos, I used to use Howard Leight plugs like this: http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/holemaxusauf.html. Foam earplugs are pretty much all the same and are worth the $$$.

I always use them when wearing a half helmet do to wind noise.
I use E-A-R® UltraFit® http://www.e-a-r.com/e-a-r.com/premo...um=340-4001001
they're inexpensive, effective, comfortable, easy to insert and won't work their way out of your ear every 20 miles like many smooth surfaced plugs will.

Here's my favorite (after trying about a dozen different types).
http://www.earplugsonline.com/u-industrial.html
Some people love 'em, others hate 'em. They're a little pricey, but about the best NRR rating. I wear them to ride and to shoot (doubled up with muffs).

These are great. The cheapo foam plugs hurt my ears after they've been in an hour or two. These don't....they mold perfectly to your ear.

I got a custom set made at my local audiologist-since I wear hering aids anyway. The ones I had made are from Westone Laboratories and are made specifically to kill the tone ranges from wind and exhaust noise. They are self-lubricating and VERY comfortable. I have had them in as long as 15 hours on some of my Iron Butt "gotta get home" rides.
It is worth the expense to have a good set. About $100 for custom ones.

Check out CEPs. I use these nearly every day for noise attenuation and to enhance my ability to hear in the cockpit over the noise of the helicopter. They can be adapted to work with and IPOD or other MP3 player / radio or even Talk about radios. They work great. Nearly every old fart in Army Aviation is using them to enhance ability to hear radios and to protect what hearing they do have left.
The website has info on noise attenuation but I would contact them directly. I usually wear mine for about 2 hours at a time and have never disliked the fit. They feel / wear much more comfortably than the regular issue foam ear plugs.
It's a really good product. I think they run around $135 for a set with six sets of replacement plugs. Don't be turned off by the small size. They sound great.

Try a bunch to find the right fit for you. Aerostitch has a 12 pack trial pack of different types of plugs:
http://www.aerostich.com/product.php...cat=343&page=1
I use the Howard Leight MAX plugs now. Before them I used the Leight Laser Lites, and for me there's no comparison, the MAXs fit my ear canals way better.
I had a set of custom Westones made as well, but on a flight I went to remove one and the plastic pull tab you use to remove them came out in my hand - with the plug stuck in my ear. 2 more hours of flying then a 2am trip to a clinic to get it removed was enough for me to go back to foamies. The MAXs work better for me anyway.
YMMV, of course.

I always wear them, helmet or not. I've tried about every pair out there and keep coming back to E-A-R Classics. everyones ear canal is different so what works for some doesnt work for all, found that out trying to fit ear buds for my I-Pod. I do like the thow away ones, plugs can get kind of nasty after a few hours, I always keep a new clean set in my pocket.
