I've been looking for quite a while for a pair of decent quality chaps that don't cost an arm and a leg. Out here in the hills every tourist trap sells biker paraphernalia and it's for show only. Most brands I looked at had leather that was thin. Very thin. Even the HD dealership had see-thru leather that you could likely rip with your bare hands. Expensive too and made in......China?!. Apparently these were made from anorexic Asian celebrity cows.
I stopped at Hot Leathers in Sturgis there on Main the other day and found the rack - o - chaps. They ranged from "ok" to "really nice". I grabbed a set at random to check the quality and thickness of the leather and was surprised to see that they're thick. Thick as the leather on my boots thick. I about crapped myself. I checked the price tag, fully expecting to see "2 or 3 Benjamins needed to complete this transaction" but to my absolute surprise they were $99.95. I about fell over. I tried them on and they fit. Seams were even and straight, YKK zippers too. The only thing I didn't like was the country of origin.
Now with my nice new chaps I look like even more of a leather clad dork on my bike
I wish I could buy more American made stuff but there's not that much stuff out there anymore. Thank your friendly unions for that.
