Hey guys, I need a good cold weather riding pants, not chaps, have it.
I went to a local store, they don't care anything in stock to try. Went to Yamaha dealer the have the Tour Master Caliber Pant, HH-031. Nice pants, price was fair $160 but it only has two front pockets and it was very bulky in the legs... Not sold.
Does anyone knows any good ones??
Thanks
David
I have these and they are real light weight the zippers go full length on each leg and are watertight easy to get in and out of. these are not cheap but you will never buy another pair they are lifetime guarantee and if you tear them or whatever send them in and they will replace any panel free of charge. It's all we use here.
+1 for ski/snow pants and you can do like I did and find them on sale at Academy Sports or somewhere similar for less than $20. They are water proof, lightweight, and have plenty of pocket space as well as easy access to your jeans pockets.
Carhartt insulated bibs work like a champ when it gets really cold and they are very durable as well. I wear 'em over jeans and long-johns.
They are available in black for the fashion conscious rider.
@gree: I think Mr. C has the best suggestion for functionality and cost.
If cost is less of a consideration such as "You just bought a new
2009 Triglide after months of visiting the dealership and drooling
on the floor, so you feel a rush of kinship with your new friend
and wish to equip yourself to be worthy of him" then you might
consider the FXRG leather pants that companion with the jacket:
Yes, they are a bit pricey, but when worn over insulated longies
and reasonably new ("crisp") jeans, I have ridden in complete comfort
down into the teens...
If being waterproof is not a requirement, (I ride as long as there is not a lot of snow, but do not enjoy riding when it's cold and wet), try either Carharts or flannel lined jeans. Both are warm enough for me in Michigan down to about 15 degrees. Easy to find and not real expensive. Both are durable as well.
I use my Icon fully flannel-lined jeans whenever it gets to be highs in the 40s-50s. They're the Icon Barrier Pant. Got 'em at around $60 from Cycle Gear 6 years ago and only wish they had cargo pockets like my BDUs.
Go to Stone Lake Leatherworks,Ill guarantee they're better than any thing else on the web, market or anything custom period! These bibs are awsome and deserve a good look at. The finest leather, deep pockets, long zipper at the fly and the zippers on these are heavy duty and good looking. These are designed to be put on with no hassel.Dont know the price at this time, but If you buy at a swap meet that they attend you can save big money.I think I paid $250.00 about 4 yrs ago. Trust me they're worth whatever they cost. stonelakeleatherworks.com they also advertise in American Iron Magazine!
I do a lot of riding in extreme conditions (hot, cold, rain), and I have been using the Tourmaster 'Flex' pants. I have the same issue, not enough pockets. I've since switch to Firstgear 'Escape' pants. Expensive, but quality is premium. Big waterproof pockets, insulated liner for extreme cold, and venting for heat. You can ride these pants from the desert to below zero temps in the mountains without changing. The don't help with the 'bulky' issue though... I think any pants designed to handle extreme cold are going to be a little bulky.
Lined Carhartt jeans (for those of us who don't like bibs) are great - if it gets too cold, I wear longjohns under them and they are even better. You can still throw a rainsuit over them if it gets wet out.
I have a pair of insulated oilcloth overpants, not to bulky, wind and waterproof, big pockets, more skid protection than denim, I wore em over vail pass coming back from vegas at 13 degrees 55mph, light snow, froze everything but my jewels, then again it would have been nippy in a space suit. bought em at twin peaks leather in arvada, co www.tpleather.com
I run Gerbings top to bottom, stay warm and toasty even when the outside temp is 28 degrees... Now, if they can add in in electric face wrap, I'd be real warm ...
I got a set of AF surplus extreme cold weather overpants years ago for $25 IIRC and they're very effective. Olive drab with a thick nylon-like outer cuts the wind pretty well. The insulating material is very effective. Friends use Carhartts and I hear no complaints.
If you go that route, be sure to get them a little longer than normal, as in a riding position the legs shorten.
