Im gettin my bike back from a 95" build(hopefully today if not Tuesday 12/15). That being said I have to break it in and all before I can get it dyno tuned but the weather here is 29. I just had to pay for a new car that I wasnt planning on and my bike build (that was planned). Does anyone have suggestions on what I can wear so I dont freeze my azz off. I have a leather jacket, gloves and a leather bandanna with fleese inside to cover my face with my half helmet. Its xmas time and I cant go out and spend anymore on myself so what do you guys suggest I wear, long johns, insulated socks and layers. Need some suggestions
Happy to help. I do a lot of cold weather miles and I volunteer for a police motor unit -- here are some lessons learned:
- The body can only "produce" so much heat
- It's production is affected by duration to the weather & the temp
- The longer you ride time and/or distance, the greater your need to "create" heat
- That means heated gear
- The most important part to keep warm is your core where the main organs are located
- A jacket liner does more for you than just a vest
- Keep your core warm - by creating heat - and the body will use its "produced" heat to go to your extremities
- Use a good neck warmer like a North Face WINDBLOCKER
- Goretex and insulated gloves
- Layer your garments
- AND DO NOT FORGET TO HYDRATE - cold temps suck the moisture right out of you BEFORE you realize it
BTSOOM what PD do you volunteer for. . My Uncle is a motorcycle instructor for Metro D.C. Thanks for the help. Just realized your from Dulles, my uncle lived in Chantilly moved 3 years ago to another suburb

Here is what I learned about some gear I tested about a month ago:
WX = 38 degrees air temp; steady cold rain
DISTANCE = 130 miles
AVG SPEED = 50
ROADS = Well paved, divided
TRAFFIC = moderate to heavy, lots of road spray
GEAR =
A+ BMW Streetguard2 Jacket = heavy gauge goretex, very well sealed, superb neck closures
A+ AEROSTICH Darien Light Pants = excellent as usual from Aerostich. Perfectly suited for wet weather riding
A+ North Face "Windstopper" Neck Gaiter = want a dry & warm neck?
D- Aerostich Combat Touring Boots = most disappointing for such a widely touted boot - my feet got soaked to the point where I could wring out water from my heavy socks. LESSON LEARNED: Nothing beats a goretex & thinsulate boot. Next test, DANNER Ft. Lewis 600g
C NEW Gerbing Gloves = The new version is advertised as better waterproof. Indeed my hands stayed dry but the outside leather got drenched. And this NEW version does not get as warm as the previous.
A+ Gerbing Jacket & Pants = love 'em.
A+ Shoei Light Amber Face Shield = Really nice vision enhancement for rainy/cloudy days.
Check your gear, replace old stuff, stay warm & dry and you will be SAFER than a wet, cold rider!!!! IMHO, BTSOOM
I've got the Gerbings Extreme Element heated textile jacket & overpants, and their G3 gloves. There isn't a temperature you'll find that this gear won't keep you warm in. I find that over time, the only thing that gets cold is my feet. I need to pick up a pair of their insoles.
Gerbings isn't cheap, but it allows you to ride year 'round in all weather conditions (other than ice).
It was 29 here this morning. Luckily the drive is less than 20 minutes.
In the cold I wear Army issue silk-weight "long johns" (cabella's brand when it's a little colder - it's heavier but not as tightly woven); boots with thick winter socks, leather jacket, ski gloves, baclava and full face helmet. The ski gloves are good but they don't last long before it's too cold - fingers are the harderst part to keep warm. An additional insert would have helped but only "active" heating like gerbing gloves keeps them from getting painfully cold at some point.
My dad sent me some cold weather stuff for Christmas a while back. The place he bought it at said leather is no good as it passes the cold temperatures through to your skin.
