You may have heard about the tragedy at Daytona Bike Week in Florida this year. Two BFC members were rear ended by a car - at approximately 60 miles per hour, while they were waiting to turn right at a green light.
Pastor Fred Z. (BFC Founder) was involved in this terrible bike wreck, breaking 3 ribs in his back, and re-injuring his Thoracic T7, 8, &9 vertebrae. He flew home, and is recovering at home with his wife Esther & the church family, at BFC HQ in California.
BFC member David Catalano (74 yrs. old) was the first one hit, and fell off his bike. His helmet actually came off on impact. David ended up with a broken pelvis, head injuries, and a lot of road rash. He was taken to a hospital. We thought that he would recover. The next day, they gave him liquid dye to take an MRI, and the unthinkable happened – David choked and aspirated on the liquid, and died. There will be an investigation.
The driver of the car that hit them, was a 19 yr. old girl who is a recovering addict. She admitted to being high on drugs, had methadone in the car, may have been on her cell phone texting – and had no insurance. There were no skid marks, she never even slowed down. She is being charged with vehicular manslaughter. Please pray for her.
Pastor Z. and the bike that he was on, had uninsured motorist coverage, and medical, so he’s fine.
Dave Catalano had previously beat cancer twice, and recently had a hip replacement. He had not been riding his bike for months, and let his bike insurance lapse… breaking it out to ride with his brothers in Daytona. He also did not have much in the way of life insurance. So his family is facing “huge” financial hard-ships right now.
