North Korea Missile Test

Does anyone think the missile explosion might have been deliberate?. Saber-rattling against the United States seems to be Kim's whole shtick. Maybe he decided a little embarrassment rather than risking actually provoking the United States made more sense for his regime. He would have lost far more "face" if he'd backed down entirely. The explosion can be explained as a technical difficulty, a fluke.

Anyway, that's what I'd do if I was the dictator of a small nation in Asia. And I do have a rep as quite the commie around here ...

I've read a lot about North Korea and I don't think it was a deliberate explosion. There's too much pride and Kim Jon Un is still looking to project power- mostly internally. I have zero doubt it was reported to be a successful launch on DPRK "news" broadcasts.

But I have been wrong before--- as my wife likes to point out.

Interesting food for thought Casey. As the token Commie around here, what do you think the ChiCom response will be?

I'm not saying Kim wouldn't need to execute a couple disloyal generals to make it look good. Heck, he could blame "American spies" and work that into story. Maybe the guy who pushed the self-destruct button. When the government controls the media, it can control the narrative.
But I could be wrong also. I just think he was caught between a rock and hard place and may have decided a failed missile test was the less painful option.

I dont think the Chinese are especially happy having North Korea on its border. From what I've read, they've dispatched their top nuclear negotiator to try and rein Kim in, so I think they're serious about containing him. I think real benefit of the Syria bombing was not saving babies who have been dying and continue to die with everyday weapons but to show the Chinese we're serious about thwarting North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

This wasn't there first dud. There has been some speculation that the bomb failed due to a hacking.

That makes sense. We've apparently been able to thwart them that way before.

I have read a lot of books on NK but I am by no means an expert. What I don't think they would do is blame America in their news. That would show a weakness that Kim can't afford.

Did a cyber attack thwart it? Possibly but I'm no cycled expert so I'd be reaching for the stars to defend it.

My money is on a very poor nation had a failed test. **** happens.

where does he get the money to build missiles and bombs? Does he get any feedback from "the people" that they would rather have food and electricity?
Is this what happens to a country that considers military more important than social programs and infrastructure?

He gets money for his military by selling coal to the Chi-Coms, and blackmails Western countries into feeding his starving population.

The people don't have a say, or if they do, three generations of their family gets to live (or not) in concentration camp.

Socialism, ideas so good they have to be mandatory!!

From what I have heard on the news media there is no internet whatsoever within North Korea so U.S. government hacking is out of the question. But I would not rule out some U.S. interference.
Their nuclear development facilities are no doubt underground, hence the MOAB strike to show numb nuts our capability to destroy underground facilities.

North Korea does have internet connections to the rest of the world and I've wondered if the missile explosion was the result of a cyber attack. I'm 100% in agreement that dropping that MOAB wasn't just about retaliation for the death of a SF sergeant.
