Well, if we have to take billions of dollars out of treasury that's empty couldn't we send them something like...new coke, or copies of microsoft 8, you know, something that nobody here really wants anyway?

Not disagreeing with the overall sentiment Dan. Some of these were given to countries I'm sure with the intent of keeping them "friends." Using the term lightly here. If we didn't perhaps they get them from somewhere else like China.
Do I agree with it? Not so sure about that.

C'mon, we know the people who assemble these planes are union workers. Got to keep them busy and employed.

The overwhelming majority of the planes are not given to countries. They are bought under foreign military sales agreements (Title 22 oversight) and as Clay said, they do not have the same capabilities as ours.

about 30 years ago Israel bought some of these jets and modified the exhaust somehow to defeat heat seeking missiels . The Americans went over to learn from them.

They traded the secrets back to the US for Jersey-Shore chicks.

It wouldn't surprise me Fred. When I worked at General Dynamics (now a Lockheed-Martin shop), the Israeli pilots knew more about flying the F-16 in combat then the USAF pilots. It was simply a matter of we hadn't had much chance to use the plane in a combat role until the first brush up with Iraq. Whereas the Israeli's had plenty of experience.

The important question is,
Did they sound any better?
...and did the pilots put stickers on their helmets reading "Cool pipes save lives"?

This weekend, while Americans were busy wrapping their I-pads, and trimming their "holiday" trees, the Egyptian people voted to adopt a Constitution based on Sharia Law.
In one day three things happened:
(1) The lives of the Coptic Christians who were living in Egypt 600 years before Mohammed was born, has become untenable. They risk death if they decide to stay.
(2) America has added another enemy to it's long list. The Muslim brothehood who now rule Egypt is no ally of the US, regardless of what you may have been told or read in the MSM.
(3) As predicted by some, the "secular" left has been crushed. The foolish Utopians who believed that the Communists and Islamists would share power in a new Egypt have been proven as naive as ever. Islam and Communism may share a Statist belief in the supreme power of the State, but it ends there.
What generally follows in this type of transition is a bloody purge. The left will be the first to go. The Islamists know that they are, inherently, as blood-thirsty as they are. They will move quickly to purge the movement of its leaders and means of communication. Next will come the racial cleansing that always follows Islamist rule. The Jews will be the first to be driven out, then a short civil war will follow before the Coptics and other Christians are forced to leave or convert.
The final purge will be Islam itself. The never-ending battle between Shiites and Sunni will erupt in bombings and assassination until one of them gains the upper hand in the military. After that, the iron doors of totalitarianism will close on the gates of Egypt for generations.
And still America intends to send them F16s?

I can't pretend to be knowledgeable about all the complex issues involved in the why's of this kinda stuff, although I'll still do it once in a while anyhow, but it seems to me these developments aren't good for US. or the general stability of the middle East at all.
Why do liberals feel that controlling or ending OUR access to firepower would somehow curb violence yet giving F16's to a violent by nature foriegn state, and other similar transactions is just A-OK.
Go figure
