Book Club taxes
Me and my buddies started a book club, we get together once a week and talk about books and listen to music. Over the months we have really expanded and needed a place to have our meetings. We bought a warehouse downtown. We have about 200 people week show up as members. We don't charge membership, but a lot of members give us money for the up keep of the facility which is a lot since we now play live music.
There are some people in our community that think our book clubs is getting too popular and we need to start paying taxes but I don't understand why. We are not a business, we don't sell anything and we do not offer any service, we only entertain ourselves with music and book discussion.
We also do charity work from time to time, we have fundraisers for the homeless etc. Do you think we should pay taxes?

Be "patriotic" and...Pay up you hater!
PS. It is not unheard of for a private non-profit to make a Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) as a recognition that you appreciate the law enforcement, fire service, sanitation...etc that your "book club" enjoys. You may want to consider taking up a small collection among the members and make a donation to say....the fire department, with a note of "thank you - for your service." A red cross blood drive can do wonders for public image too.

Lawyers created the laws so you would hire one to figure out sh!t like this. I'd say it's time to go see one.

It sounds like you are expanding into the realm of taxable status.
You could file for tax exempt under a 501c3 if you truly are a not for profit charitable organization.

Your group presumably pays real estate taxes on your warehouse. You probably pay a tax on the utilities you use. What would anyone expect you to pay taxes for if you have no income?

I'm sure that there are books that you could read that explain everything.

So you think churches shouldn't have to pay anything beyond property taxes then?

Who said anything about churches? Why are you injecting that into the topic?
