It really isn't the place of a union to "save" a company. The only way that would typically happen is for the workers to get screwed.

Likely the union leaders do not lose their jobs any more than you will see the upper management from the company standing in the unemployment line or hurting for money.

That's not irony any more than rain on your wedding day is.

It is unfortunate, but the truth is that the same company that "took the jobs away" provided those same jobs to begin with. There was never a guaranty of work. There never is.

Would union concessions have "saved the company" or just prolonged the inevitible? Hard to say.

Good chance the popular brands will be bought by US companies and produced here. Transportation for low cost items like that would be prohibitive.

It's not just the 18,500 direct jobs. Suppliers and other local businesses will lose up to another 30% to go along with the core job losses.

When you think about what the workers lost, and what they were paid you need to factor in benefits. Union benefits aren't cheap. $16.50 an hour isn't big money by anyones standard, but I bet if you ask any on those workers what they regret the most it's going to be the loss of their medical and pension.

Hard to blame the venture cap's that saved Hostess a few years ago. They invested millions of dollars in a failed company. Without them this conversation would be long over. Sure, they tried to get back as much of their investment as possible, and probably will do OK with the sale of the brands, but isn't that what high risk investment is all about?

Sad to think of it, but this may be just the start of a trend. A lot of companies, big and small, are teetering on insolvency. Hang on....

Have you read the label on a York Peppermint Patty or on some other Hershey products lately? Made in Mexico! BTW, I called Hershey when a friend told me about it to see if it was true or not and they confirmed it. I figure if it is feasible to make candy in Mexico and ship it here they can make Twinkies in Mexico and ship them here too.

Feasible but not practical. Weight/cube on a Hersey bar is a lot different than a Twinkie. They're gonna have to make them fairly close to the customer.

So the answer was NO. So the next logical question would have to be has anyone ever heard of a union distroying a company?

The story isn't over yet, but the Teamsters are doing a pretty good job of saving YellowRoadway.

Teamsters are one of the biggest creditors and have the most to lose if RYC goes out. They cut pay and suspended pension payments, are taking real estate and equity in the company in place of cash for monies owed to them and used their influence to get lenders to extend and modify loan agreements. Without Teamster help RYC would be gone.

Understand, the Teamsters aren't doing all that because they're bighearted lollypops. RYC going out of business would be a devastating blow to them, they'll kick that can down the road as long as they can.

As far as unions destroying companies. Plenty of blame goes around when a company goes out of business. Unreasonable labor demands, both wage/benefit and work rule, have taken their toll. Poor management has been responsible for many failures as well. Usually it's a combination of both.

Seems as if their (Hostess) debt isn't as big as management claimed. ABC news tonight.

Not quite sure how, but a Judge apparently decided that the two parties would have to go through reconciliation first.

Quote:
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (CNNMoney) -- Hostess Brands and a key union agreed Monday to try to mediate their dispute -- an unexpected development that could spare the company from permanently shutting down.
At the same time, Sun Capital has already said it wants the skeleton.

Not sure of the mill you are talking about, I drive a Truck for a living and since I started in 1983 I can name more then 10 that are gone, because of cheaper oversea's steel coming in. These plants were the size of mid-sized Towns, and covered miles of ground. One plant in the town not far from me got sold to an outside country, they move every Machine and most of the building to the sea port, ( I help ship it out. I don't see much This country MAKES and if we still do, it most of the time gets shipped over sea, Not always but most. Don't believe, start looking in the store.

"Sun Capital has already said it wants the skeleton."

And they don't have a problem keeping it unionized.
