Voices of Reason

I really do wish that the Reps would have the courage to tell Mr. Norquist to buzz off. I really do wish Obama would have the courage to tell folks they can't make the rich to pay for all the things they'd like to have nor can they have their cake and eat it too.

Once again Simpson and Bowles are at it again and talking sensibly.

For Simpson, the problem is especially apparent in health care, which they identified as one of five key areas where debt-reduction has to focus. Congress in 2010 passed President Barack Obama's national health care plan that will go into effect fully in 2014. (Read More: Health Law Has States Feeling Tense Over Deadline)

"This baby is on automatic pilot," he said. "It can't possibly succeed. There is no cost containment in this baby until down the road, and we know what will happen down the road — nothing."

In addition to health care, the other four targeted areas are defense, the tax code — Bowles called it "the most ineffective, inefficient, globally anti-competitive tax code that any man could dream of" — Social Security and compound interest on the debt.

In defense, the U.S. spends more than the next 17 countries combined.

"I think we've been disproportionately responsible for world peace and I don't think America can afford to be the world's policeman," Bowles said.

On the tax code, they recommend cutting taxes to promote growth but eliminating many deductions in order to broaden the base of who pays.

For those of you on the left, you might want to pay attention to that last part in red.

50% income tax. For this we get free medical, free school, free mass transit, free daycare, liveable retirement pension. But that 47% has to contribute. If not money they can clean up parks and streets, work in the daycares, etc.
The military can trim down from the next 17 countries to just the next 10 countries.
A chicken in every pot and some pot for every chick.

Thanks anyway Fred, but I do not want to give the government 1 of every 2 dollars of my income so they can manage my life for me. I'd prefer they take their 10% and get the hell out of the way instead.

But that's me...I'm a hater.

Good luck with that. Seriously, who is going to take the lead on that budget/security issue? Here in northern VA, I watched commercial after commercial and news clip after news clip from the Romney/Ryan campaign saying how they wouldn't touch the defense budget and/or attacking the President for proposing cuts. They were going to keep us strong-- more ships, tanks, F-35s, for all. In any event, I'm guessing proposing drastic defense cuts isn't coming out of the Republican party anytime soon. If the democrats propose them, which may be a tick more likely, it's going to be met with strong resistance and all of the, "The sky is falling!", comments are going to come rolling out.

I'm guessing drastic cuts in any gov't spending aren't coming out of either party anytime soon, but eventually they will. Pay me a lot now or pay me even more later are the options I believe we have at this point.
