Electoral College
Should we do away with the electoral college? David Letterman supposedly did this poll and the results were 75 percent yes.

Absolutely it serves no purpose any more.

Constitution haters!
It served a purpose in our country's early days, then was probably not necessary. As complete ignorance is rapidly on the rise, it probably will serve a good purpose in the future.

Yes. I know for me personally it would make me feel like my vote actually counted.

I feel the same way. Living in Illinois I am pretty sure Obama is getting "my vote" whether I like it or not.

Being from North Dakota, of course I'd like to see it go away. Given the political landscape the last couple decades and the fact that the "big" states essentially always determine the POTUS election, I also feel that my vote is futile, even symbolic. And when I look at the Red/Blue distribution by county I'm even more discouraged than I am when I look at the Red/Blue distribution by state.

Unfortunately Doc, I think that is like wishing that sour tasting lemons go away.

If they did away with the electoral college, the small states would lose power. Right now small states have more power proportional to their size because of the way electors are distributed. So it is interesting to see that you want North Dakota to have less influence in choosing the president than it does now.

I agree, the electoral college protects small states from the will of the larger states.
The only advantage to getting rid of the electoral college that I can think of is that candidates would have to go to more of the states instead of focusing on the dozen or so battleground states.

There is an interesting proposal which I think is on the ballot in Vermont, or at least being proposed there. It would keep the electoral college for tradition but would essentially make the election decided by popular vote. Here is how it would work.
The voters of Vermont would be able to vote for whomever they want for president. But the electoral college votes of Vermont would not go to the one who got the most popular votes in Vermont but whomever got the most popular votes in the national vote count. If every state did that, we would have the president picked by popular vote while still retaining the electoral college for tradition.

Wouldn't that just eliminate a less populated states citizens right to vote in what they consider to be their best interest?

Do you know what Democracy is? It's mob rule. It's 2 wolves and a rabbit voting on dinner.
That's why the EC exists, and why it's necessary.
It's also why we were founded as a Republic, and NOT as a Democracy. Those guys knew what they were doing.

Sounds kind of dumb. Why vote at all then?
