Any way to tell if oil was going by rings?

I pulled the heads and barrels off today to try to see why it is smoking so bad. I have oil coming out of my exhaust pipe. I can see where oil has been going through there but I can't tell if the rings are bad by looking at them. Is it possible that the oil was coming down through the head and through the valve and then going out the exhaust and not going by the rings? Help appreciated

generally if it was coming past the rings the carbon would be washed away from around the edge of the dome, if in the head you would see a wet trace from the guide out the exhaust port.

I see what you mean about the carbon being washed away at the top of the barrel. I have some carbon but it is not all the way around, Looks like it has been wiped.

When you looked @ the rings on the pistons, were the end gaps stagggered

as recommended or were they lined up?

Check to see if the piston rings were inserted correctly.

Usually the dot goes up, as does the camfered side of the ring.

Did this smoking start slowly or has it been that way since you have had it.

yeh the rings looked like they were staggered and 1 has a dot (it is the 2nd one down) the first one looks squared , so I don't think it matters which way is up. it started smoking a while back. I let it go on until I was putting to much oil in. I was told this time after starting the motor to hold a heat gun and get it up to 250 degrees then cut off and let cool and do it again 5 more times. This should help seat rings.
