Single or dual with dual plug heads?
My tuning is now down to ignition. Im going to step away from the point set-ups this time and order a new ignition with no clue of what to get. Its basically stock FL shovel with dual plug heads and only running single plugs. What would be the best value in an ignition and coil or coils? Dual or single fire for my application? Different plugs? I want the basic, proven set up. Getting closer..... Jeff

If there is a choice, the single fire is had to beat. It cured a lot of problems in my stock Shovelhead. I run single fire Spyke with a matching 80KV coil, resistor plug wires as recommended and also AC Delco R44LS plugs. The ignition is just excellent.

You will have to run 2 coils with dual outlets for single fire dual plug heads. There may be someone now that makes a single package coil with 4 outlets. Crane makes a coil with 2 coils in a single package but last I knew, it only has 2 outlets and not 4. It is made for single fire with single plug heads. If you would like to see a wiring diagram, you can go to cranes web page and down load the installation instructions for the Crane Hi-4 single fire ignition. That is what I used 6 years ago and have not had the first problem. How much compression are you running? If it is a low compression motor, I wouldn't spend the money. If it is 9 or 10 to 1, it will be some of the best money you could spend.

8 3/4 to 1, low compression. I already have dual plug heads installed and I need a complete ignition from new coil to advance unit anyway.(left the damn key on AGAIN !!). Thought I would upgrade now to electronic so when I leave the key on again, I will really be pissed.. I did find a Compu-fire set up as a complete package. Dual plug, single 4 output coil, single fire. Seems like a good choice unless anyone has had issues with it. I ride this about 20k a year. All the systems out there are spendy. I was hoping to get off alot cheaper than 350 bucks. Get what you pay for I guess. I spent 3 hours researching this stuff today and Im just as confused now as when I started. Probably why Im still running points.Jeff

Ha, 8-3/4:1...that's not low. My Shovelhead has stock low compression pistons...7.4:1. Now that's low but I love it. Probably with 8 3/4 you can get by with only one plug per cylinder if you use mid-grade or premium. I can run the lowest grade available with my bike and at $3.30 a gallon for premium where I am, it's regular for me.

I have been running a Crane HI-4 ignition and a Compufire 4 plug coil on my 81 FXE with dual plug heads for several years now and am having no problems. The compufire coil is 1 unit and puts out quite a spark. Believe me I know. I got a piece of it once and my arm hurt for a couple of days.

Dyna makes an excellent 4 post single fire coil. Their part # is DC6-4. 3 ohms, will work with just about any aftermarket single fire ignition. The coil is carried by all of the major vendors.....Bill

I take it you're running Baisley heads? Why not give him a call and ask what he recommends. Even if Baisley didn't do the head work, you'll get a good answer for your setup
