Karp13 wants to know Dino or Syn?
Starter Stays Engaged

I have a 79 Lowrider that I purchased with a bad starter drive and some cut wires for the starting circuit. I replaced the drive with a new one and resoldered the wires together. Now when I try to start the bike the starter stays engaged till I disconnect the battery cables. Every once in a while it will release, but rarely. I tried replaceing the solenoid with a new one from accel, but that did not help. The Jackshaft is straight and alone the starter seems to turn fine. Any Ideas on what I should check first?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Check your wiring on the small starter relay that mounts under the battery box. It sounds like it's holding in.........no charge for this wild guess.....

I figured it out. The fingers that push and pull the starter drive were slightly bent and when it would pull in they would bind the collar that they ride in and it would not fully disengage from the ring gear. Spent a little time tweaking them and it works great now.

Thanks

Good. That's been known to happen due to the cheap material HD used to make that part.
