Bad Coil?

Hey been riding my 79 fxe around and it has been running great... untill today about 5 miles from my house she started coughfing alittle the I noticed a lack of power then she died. Checked my wireing and made sure i was getting fuel, then i gave her a few kicks and she fired up so I left and continued on my ride. About a mile or so later she started sputtering again and running crapy and died on me again I was only a few blocks from a friends house so I limped it there... Wouldnt ya know he wasnt home...
Again after letting it sit for 15 minutes I gave her a few kicks and she started up again so i decided to head for home but then she died on me after only about a block so I limped back to my friends house. And there she sits.

Things I checked

1. made sure I had fuel and that fuel was getting to the carb and to the cylenders.. seen no problem.
2. checked wireing for shorts and made sure my points werent sticking.

the one thing i noticed is that my coil was very hot to the touch. Could this be a sighn that my coil went south on me?

Any help would be apriciated thanks

I'm no expert mate, so take this as intended and not gospel!!

Check the battery charge.. I had this on a bike and it was a flat battery. As the bike stood the battery will regain its charge a little and then restart, until it goes flat again...
hope that helps mate.. good luck
