Any '45 Experts out there?

While chasing an oil leak (go figure), I pulled the scavenger pump out of my old '45 flathead.
Anybody know a trick to re-install it with the correct pump timing without pulling the side cover?

I used to have 45's but your question stumps me. Best thing to do is to get on a website that does flatheads. One that I can think of is on MSN...Harley Tech Talk. There are other sites that have people who would know the answer to your question. Otherwise if you had a service manual that would solve the issue.

Thanks for the website tip.

Now, after further thinking, seems like I should be able to just:
1. Line up the flywheels to the timing mark.
2. Line up the breather hole on the pump.
3. "Mark" the bottom of the pump housing to line up with the key.
4. Slap in the pump, manipulating the gear to end up in sync with the markings.

Any problem with this plan?

thats how i remember.as a check, make sure when you rotate the engine, the breather is opewning on the downstroke.
