Starters

The Starter is bad in my bike...have NOT yet removed it, but I have an opportunity to get an OE from a friend right now for cheap, but I first need to know...Did Harley use (from the factory) Prestolite or Hitachi Starters in the 1982 FXE's AND/OR DOES IT MATTER which one I use? Help me out here fellas.

I understand that the Prestolite was used in the early Electraglide FL's from 1965 through 1969. My parts catalog for 1971 through 1984 FX shows the Hitachi Starter. It's the same one that I have on my 1982 FXS. It is part no. 31570-73. The book shows it was used on all bikes with electric start from 1974 on. I don't have the FL parts book to cross check but I think that this is correct.

So, my educated guess is that you need the Hitachi version.
