Clutch Hub Removal

Aight here is the question I have.Trying to pull the three finger clutch hub off of my 82 shovel.I got everything off but the hub itself including the nutt from hell that I have been reading about.I was wondering if any kind of gear puller would do or would yall reccomend using the specific clutch hub puller made by JIMS.I have a run of the mill gear puller on it right now but didnt want to go past 2 grunts on the bolt for fear of tearing some up.Yeah I am new to this .Thanks for your help in advance...

three hole slotted puller

On occasion I use a steering wheel puller (three bolt pattern) to remove the hub. It does not fit quite right but it does work. The big issue is to not use the puller directly on the threaded shaft of the transmission. I recomend you leave the nut on about half to three quarter threaded on the shaft. Then when the puller get the hup to pop all you need do is remove the puller and then the nut. Some times you need to use the puller a second time; useually not. The transmission shaft on a 5 speed is tapered and has a woodruf key. I don't know if the four speed shaft is the same.

One of the frustrating things about the clutch hub is the three or five bolt hubs are both based upon a five bolt pattern. Therefore few if any pullers are made for the pattern. The right puller is the right tool.

You need to use the correct puller. Not that I'm a tool snob or anything like that. It's just that, as Toybox* says the pattern is rather unusual. Also, it's possible to make scrap out of your clutch hub if you use the wrong puller.

I looked at a new CCI HD hub puller back in 1990 in an Indy shop. The owner offered to rent it to me for $10 a day. The price was $29.95. I bought it instead. I've used it 50 or 60 times since then so it is a worthwhile deal.

If you buy the puller, while you're at it, get the big socket and handle that CCI sells for the countershaft sprocket nut.

I never feel bad spending money on tools.

Hub pullers are cheap-Jim's Machine sells a real nice one for not too much, but I gotta confess, over the years I've popped more than one hub with a long-ass screwdriver on the side of the road. Slow and careful, get it into the center of the hub as much as you can. Not recommended, but it works. To get it started, try tapping straight in on the studs towards the tranny...sometimes you can jar it enough to loosen it.

nuclear hummmmmmmmmmmmmm

Maybe we could weld up a small reactor to power a Harley. Rather than having a twinkie we could have a nuckie.

at the rate gas keeps going up this could be the wave of the future. I can see it now night time rides where everything is a glow.

Meanwhiwle on the more serious side maybe there is a machinest where you work who could drill a three hole puller plate to be on the five bolt pattern. It should be straight forward as the bolts would be on 72 degree intervals. And a lot of parts houses (NAPA, PeP Boys) have steering wheel pullers that should be a good start on a hub puller. Another option would be to make a plate with the corect bot pattern and put it over a two or three jaw puller. Just a thought. If you've got access to a macinest you could do it easily and cheap. I've got a hub lying around here and could easily give the needed dimensions to you.

You can make your own puller with some angle iron and threaded rod w/ nuts. I made one years ago and have used it several times.
