ironhead case differences (generator/alternator)

what is the difference between the alternator style cases and the generator style cases in an ironhead...other than the alternator/generator. i have an 85 sporty with a cracked case and i am having hell finding a replacement for that model as i only have a two year window. i'm just curious how much trouble it would be to buy a generator style replacement case and use it as a replacement. anyone have any thoughts?

I'm not sure if this will help you but i have a 70 XLCH that has an alternator on it. the previous owner did the work, so i know you can get an alernator in there. other than that i have no idea about other differences that might pop up.
