Another Quick Question, Oil Lines?????

I didn't mean to make this thread sound redundant with others, including the one I posted last year, but I do have a quick question.

Last year a PDF was posted showing all the lines to disconnect and keep when converting to the separated primary self oil system.

Is the lower crankcase port the only vent I need on the system? Do I also need a tank vent?

When I put a hose on the lower crankcase port does it just hang out in the open and does it ever spit oil? Obviously I'll clamp it up properly somewhere so it doesn't flop around.

I've put the primary all back together now and I've used the old inlet port for my case vent. I'll just clamp that down out of the way.

Okay, maybe I had several more questions, but this one should be the last for today.

What is the purpose of the breather being timed with the cam? Does it only allow venting during piston down stroke? Does air ever try to get pulled back into the vent/breather? If air does get sucked back in, shouldn't I put an inline type breather filter on the end to keep unwanted crap from the breather assembly?

That should do it for today. I'm right in the process of reinstalling the oil tank and running my oil lines today. I got my motor all back in last Sunday and the bike is starting to look more like a finished bike. I'll post a few more pictures after I have it more together.

I really appreciate the suggestions and advice I've been given here. I've got a life time of experience on mechanical things, but not on Harleys, so your help is very nice.

Thanks again guys.

Dan

This should answer all your questions on a Dry to Wet Primary conversion.
Neat Website too!

Yes, it can spit oil if the check ball (or the seat) in your oil pump becomes worn. During periods of long storage the oil will seep past the check ball and into the case. If you ever start it up after a long storage period and it pukes out a lot of oil then you'll know. Some guys put a little breather on the end of the vent hose but it's not necessary.
