ironhead help needed

just restarted the project. think we have a 72 motor in a 1978 frame.so should work??
the motor is 4D52318H2 .
what I would like is if someone could take a couple of pictures for help please.
firstly .. removed oil tank . I need to see how the tank is fitted which brackets am I missing?
secondly.. with chain cover removed, I need to see the ? chain oiler pipe layout, where should it run to clear the chain and where is it secured to, also I can see the two engine oil line outlets but what is the large threaded spigot underneath from gearbox? is it speedometer as front wheel has speedo drive in?? many thanks
either post the pics here or pm me an email address and will look that way.

no, that switch is fitted, the one Im asking about is approximately where no1 is ,directly under the vee about the same level as 1 but has an external thread around 3/4" x 20tpi at a guess with what looks like a speedo drive in the centre, which is why Im asking if speedo I also have one on the front wheel.

I think you may be right, mine was off the front wheel tho
On Sportsters up until and including 1972, the speedometer drive runs off the countershaft low gear in the transmission. The drive is a round insert through the transmission casing with a beveled rotating gear on the end that meshes with the low gear. A cable is attached which of course goes to the speedometer. The speedo drive gear rotates the inner part of the cable, which rotates the mechanism in the speedo head to operate the odometer and speedometer.

thanks for that, seems like they had an option for speedo drive from either or place then. as its in direction of travel seems an ideal spot for dirt to get in. unless there is some sort of cover missing.

still need a picture of oil tank brackets
