shovelhead timing problem? help

Hi guys, I am trying to close this deal I have been working for a shovelhead chopper. and unforrtunitly the guy i am dealing with has a bit of a languge barrier. What I got from him is he did something to the "points" and now the bike wont kick start. The only way it will start is if you push start it. I am not sure if he is B/Sing me or if its the truth. I just dont want to get into a major project, and the reasoin I am asking because I am for sure no mechanic, and I was just curious if this might be a common problem?

If the bike starts by pushing it, the points are set, as is timing, well enough, if it runs. How it runs may be another issue.

Is it a cam cone points set up, or distributor?

Kicking it takes some finesse and know-how. I'm wondering if language isn't the only barrier here....

If it's electric start, and it won't start, (turn over) then something wrong with the electrics, if he has to push it to get it to run.

as stated kick starting is a routine that gets to be know the longer you have the bike. If the points are not set correct then he is telling the truth. they can get very hard to kick start but pushing will allow them to roll over more times thus helping overcome a bad tune ....flooded condition etc.
no disrespect but you stated you are for sure no mech. Well if you purchase this bike most likely you will either become one or the bike will be in the shop a lot of the time. Shovels are great but the little extra maintenance they require will either make you learn or drain your wallet . JMO
Good luck whatever you decide

buy a shovel, and you have a major project! not knocking shovels, thats the way it is. if the price is right, it would be worth the $$ as a learning experience.

alternator motors are easiest and most reliable, and you can add pointless ignition and rebuild motor to start on one kick, but they still arent for the maintenance challenged.

i have a 1974 fl for sale , no language barrier here.
