Hello All!
I seem to be getting oil coating my front pipe on my 74 xlch 1000.The motor has 3000 miles on a fresh rebuild....I run with an oil cooler and exposed oil filter up front. On the hottest days the bike runs 150-160 max temp.I am running Kendal sae50... any thoughts? Thanks Ryder

I am surprised that no one has any thoughts on why oil is in my exhaust pipe

You should NOT have any oil in the pipes and just after a fresh rebuild start taking it apart. Or take it back to the shop that rebuilt it also is it burning, using, oil ? more that a quart in 700 miles or less That would confirm a problem with that front cylinder or head Iron head XL's are known to leak some oil but not in the exhaust pipes good luck with it

I'd suspect a valve guide was set up too loose or is worn.
Iron XLs have no valve seals so the valve guide to valve stem clearance is critical.
Were the heads redone with the rebuild? big mistake if not.

Thanks all for your views... It dosent burn oil no smoke from the pipe.... It will use some oil but nothing like a quart in 700 miles...The oil is coating the pipe not just a ring at end... It's not like it's gushing out just a film coat in the pipe....The heads have new guides and valves.... I suspect it's a guide thanks for you input

Either the guide fitment in the cylinder head, or the guide/valve clearence.
It could also be migrating over the firelip from the oil drain.
Dissassembly and inspection will tell all.
